They have recently built intramural fields on that piece of property, dont know if that would prevent it from being used for football or not.

I also find it odd that none of these options are on campus. Also, all the pics say Convocation Center. Makes me think that the brilliant journalists at the East Tennessean might have gotten things mixed up.

Why on earth would they consider putting a football stadium in downtown? On or near campus is where it belongs, preferably between the CPA and maintenance building. I could maybe accept the General Mills site but finding parking there would be a pain in the ass, and I doubt that the site is actually big enough for a stadium... It definitely wouldn't leave much space for expansion.

Honestly, this is probably the first thing that the President has done that I am not in favor of since he has been here. A new football stadium needs to either be on campus, or immediately off campus. The factory site is the farthest that it needs to be off campus. Of these choices, my favorite would be the Ashley Rd. site, i guess. Im clueless why downtown JC or near Science Hill would even be considered. Frankly, thats just stupid in my opinion.

those are all convocation sites, with the exception of maybe one. somebody at the east tennessean is confused. the odds are high it will be on campus. thats what noland wants.

If that is true, i have no problem with the convocation site being at any of these sites, except close to Science Hill. Off campus would let us partner with the city. I would still prefer it be walking distance to campus

I believe you are correct. These sites are not big enough for a football stadium with potential of future expansion and parking. If all we want is a stadium with 6,000 on each side, then maybe these will work, but I don't think that is the vision.

BTW Where can I find a map of where they are going to be putting and tennis facility and the new parking garage? Although these have been talked about here many times, I still am not sure where these two facilities will be actually located.

RE: Possible Football Stadium Locations (East Tennesseean Article)
It must be on campus, no other option. Come on, some common sense here. If football is to increase the size of the front porch of the university, then it has to remain directly attached to the university. Having people ON CAMPUS in the fall is the only option. Near parking, view of campus, as suggested elsewhere, at the end of women's dorm row with an eastwardly view of campus would be great. Sure there must be other campus options. And flooding? Does the soccer stadium flood? Why not next to that facility? Regardless, it's got to be on campus unless that Semonole Drive location can be made as an immediate extension of the campus with the elevated stadium giving a good view of the campus to the northeast with good access to the existing campus parking. It must be fan friendly, campus scenic, people pleasing. People go to football games for numerous reasons; all those reasons must be taken into account. Besides, how could the school ever have a legit homecoming "off campus"? An off campus stadium dooms the program out of the starting gate --- it will NEVER work!!! Would be much better returning to the Dome than going off campus!!

The old National Guard site is not near campus? I wouldn't want it there, traffic would suck but seems pretty close to me.

Also Harman Ice is not anywhere close to the General Mills site unless they have another location on Walnut street I am not aware of besides the one next to Chrome.

Any one of these sites might be ok for basketball. I would actually be ok with a basketball arena near downtown or on walnut street... That would probably help attract an organization like the southern professional hockey league and make going to a concert in JC more attractive.

Isn't it great that the location of a football stadium is what we're arguing about?!?!

Does the VA property have any land availability? It might be a little disconcerting to put a ball park among grave markers...but the fast food places didn't seem to have a problem with it.

The Va would be a nightmare getting in and out of. the VA would never allow in a million years but I really don't know of a spot big enough to hold a stadium anyway.

RE: Possible Football Stadium Locations (East Tennesseean Article)
I'd like to see the General Mills space used effectively because it would help unite the downtown with campus in a positive economic way. The stadium would have food and bar options nearby, and could itself be used as venue during Blue Plum and for other events. All of this would be in reach of students on foot. I see the city and university missing the opportunity, though. I would be fine with a stadium on the other side of campus, but I think there would be traffic issues.
