NBA refereeing
Stever and I have been debating the merits (or lack thereof) in the MLB hot stove thread. That thread really needs to stay MLB only, so I thought it best to branch that discussion out to its own thread.

RE: NBA refereeing
fouls getting called closer would make games longer initially, but eventually folks would learn, and adjust.

And- I'm talking both ways- so if an offensive player runs into a player- offensive foul going the other way.

Bobby Knight would like it if they called traveling in the pro game.

I think you'd completely slow down the game and make them into free throw festivals. I agree that players would adjust (as they always do), but i can't see how calling it closer than it already is would be a good thing

mayeb i need to be educated on this, because I really have no idea what everyone is talking about. The only college bball i watch is St. John's and I really don't see how they do anything different than the NBA players.

After they adjust, the game would be a lot more fun to watch. You'd have a bit with a lot of free throws- but then would see less and less.

i really don't understand why you'd want that. What would it accomplish and what's the purpose?

If you watch any NBA you will see players almost always get a free pass on traveling, double dribbling, and carrying the ball every game. Arguably the NBA's official rule is you get 3 STEPS SOMETIMES.

i watch 82 Thunder games and I really don't see what you're seeing, but as whatever you think is going on, is called evenly throughout the league, I don't see why it's a problem

I just think you'd end up with a game that has less banging in the post and less incentive to go for a blocked shot

although one rule change i'd like to see is goaltending. The European rule is better and more fun
