Jim Christian of the Ohio Bobcats is the highest paid MAC coach at a base of $425,000

I'll save you all some trouble. This appeared in a story about Rob Senderoff last spring in KentWired.com.

I don't know how precise the numbers are, but so far they look good. Didn't Dambrot get a raise this summer? That would explain the discrepancy.

I'm tempted to say Louis Orr is underpaid...but he isn't.

If anything, he's overpaid.

Honestly, looking at this list it's pretty clear why BG is keeping him around and not going after another coach just yet. He's cheap.

Counting Dambrot's salary the MAC average salary is 250,000.

Ohio and Akron should be at the top of the MAC as far as salary. NIU again is showing that its willing to invest at the MAC's upper tier.

Bowling Green appears content with just keeping pace with the MAC's middle to bottom average in coaching salaries.

NIU is on board with keeping pace with coaching salaries. Patton was paid more than most of the league despite running our team into the ground and we came right back with a top salary for Montgomery. It would be nice to see the bottom pick it up a bit. Similar to football though I really think there is a difference of opinion / divide in the top versus bottom of the MAC in coaching pay and what value it really brings.

As mentioned in another thread by one of the UMass guys the A-10 generally pays coaches in the ½ to 1 million range. I also think this is why we may never see UMass all in or not for a while. Molnar is already near the top of the MAC in football pay and Addazio was as well for Temple when they were here. That is great from a football standpoint but when we are talking all sports it doesn't give them a lot of reasons to make the move when they are coming from a perceived more successful place and one that allows programs to retain coaches with compensation.

I believe Kellogg makes north of $800K at UMass.

To your points...

1) I agree there is a philosophical difference between the schools with regard to coaching salaries. You can't just evaluate a school on one sport though because they could be laying it out in basketball like Akron is but not as much in football where the program is at a low level within the MAC.

2)Molnar is only making 250,000 in base salary, near the bottom of the MAC. Addazio was much higher than any of the other MAC coaches.

3) Ohio has Solich at 495k base income including retention bonus. Jim Christian is at 525k actually. Solich has additional incentives that can push him over 800k included in his contract.

RE: Salaries for Mens Bball coaches?
The MAC is now committed to raising salaries within its strategic plan for Men's basketball and football so I don't see how there would be an issue with UMass's coach making 800k.

The MAC is starting to catch up to the high mid major conferences in salary despite a few schools not wanting to spend. When the UMass job was paying 400k, Ohio was only paying 100k so comparatively we are catching up.

Can anyone post research that shows a correlation between coaching salaries and success in the MAC? For example, something showing the relationship between coaching salaries and championships would be of interest.

Don't recall reading this type of analysis anywhere. Does it exist?

You would have to factor out the chicken /egg issue... Was the coach a success because he was well compensated or well compensated because he was a success?

A simple scatter chart would be a good start. Then see if any trend line exists, and what the R^2 term is.

I think it's much more than coach's salary.

Why? Figure out who held up the trophy and determine how much he/she was paid compared to their peers.

DrT has the best idea, but I already have a job. I'm just trying to find the relevance of the incessant threads on coaching salaries.

How come the four black coaches are at the bottom of the pay scale. Sound like some schools low balled these guys to get or keep a head coaching gig. Those school are getting what they paid for. Shame on UB. Witherspoon tenure deserves a higher pay. If your not gonna fire him, you can atleast pay him average salary among league coaches. He's atleast gotten his team to the MAC finals and multiple times in the semis.

Billy Taylor is 4-16 in his last 20 MAC games so I will say he's overpaid.

I agree with this. Reggie has been the best coach that UB has had in football or basketball since they joined the MAC. Men's basketball has been the one prominent program to give some pride to Buffalo.
