Not gonna lie. Bolin is my favorite player. You can even hear me yelling it from the band, hahaha.

RE: Toledo
I went to the Toledo game. The band was GREAT. The convo is a VERY NICE facility. The players, for the most part, tried hard.

Now, the coaching was VERY suspect, and the overall impression was EXTREMELY disappointing. MM should start to feel significant pressure. If he can't keep players, and we are cosntantly playing freshmen, the results will be the same.
SOmeone can correct me on the specifics, but as best i can remember, NIU struggled all thru the game to get a lead. Finally, with under 3 minutes left, NIU took a 2 or 3 point lead. NIU had the ball, and we came down court with the ball, and MM decided it was a good idea to ice the ball. we played four corners (a team who has struggled mightily to score all season plays 4 corners!) We got the ball stolen, they came down and I think we fouled them and they got a 3 point play and took the lead. MM brought in Nader and the rest of the way the offense consisted of give it to Nade and get out of his way. Nader painted himself into a corner and failed to deliver, and we lost. That's what i saw. feel free to correct me if I am wrong.

My takeaway? If you continue to bring in freshmen and play them, nothing is going to change (unless we land a couple of superstars-- or maybe if if we do!) MM also was doing offensive/ defensive substitutions! Really? With a bunch of freshmen?
I came away with the impression that, as a head coach, MM makes a GREAT assistant coach.

To be clear, I am not saying he should be fired now. However, I am saying he should be asked some serious questions, E.g., why ice the ball with under 3 minutes left and a razor thin lead with a team that can't score? Why continue to play practically all freshmen with no upper classmen? Why is the offense not more balanced? Why is Bolin not featured more? Why all the yelling at/ with your point guards? Why are we not winning a winnable game against Toledo at home? What is the plan to get better in the next year?

Einstein said insanity is continuing to do the same things and expecting different results. I feel like our bball program is continuing to do the same things and expecting different results. That's a bit insane. We need to develop players. That is how a team can get a chance to win from a situation/ position like we are presently in.

actually I think NIU got in the game with Nader on the bench. The, as you said, he was inserted and the offense turned into 1 guy plays (Nader) and everyone else get out of his way. I don't think it was just him deciding to do it all himself. That was a coaching decision. He was sent in to take over the game and his teammates were obviously instructed to get out of his way. we saw how well that worked. HORRIBLY. That was a coaching decision that MM should be asked about and his feet should be held to the fire. His decisions are not matching the talent level he is coaching, and they are inconsistent.

There were 11 assists in the game. FOR BOTH TEAMS COMBINED. Bad one-on-one basketball by both squads.

The good news is, with nobody passing the ball, at least turnovers were down.

NIU played right into Toledo's hands by fouling as well. The rebounding war was even, at least.

The hustle was there, but it's still a frustrating offense. This game felt too much like the Ricardo Patton "Xavier Silas show featuring nobody" offense. With Nader playing Silas, of course.

Bolin had a monster game; 18 points on six shots? With Nader going 8-22, there's more shots there for Bolin. Has to be.

Despite the negatives, NIU had a chance to win this one so I can't be crazy upset. But it was an annoying loss.

1) some of the calls against our guys at the end were very questionable. On you other points, you are dead on! (As I just posted before reading your post.)

Askel is a junior and should know better....(not knowing how much time was left on the shot clock)

On that play, it was a bad shot from Nader (and airball) that Bolin either rebounded or it got deflected to him. Either way, I am sure he thought Nader's bad shot hit the rim. When he realized it had not, there was basically no time on the clock and so he threw up a shot. I am not concerned about "forgeting the shot clock." I am worried about the offense that results in Nader getting trapped in the corner and throwing up a prayer-- airball. On another possesion about the same time and situation in the game he (Nader) took about a 35 footer-- miss. Why? To describe it as the Silas offense from a couple of years ago is very accurate. And Nader is no Silas! (Hell, Silas was no Silas.)

Bolin killed us at the line, he needs to hit those late in the game. If there is a legit criticism of Coach Montgomery I do agree that late in the game you just cant change what you have been doing the whole game and put it all in the hands of one player. And by late in the game I mean the last 8 minutes. The Kent game was pretty clear, NIU got out to a lead, and then it was a one man show and Kent got back in. Obviously Nader won it in the end , but thats one possession at the end of the game, which of course then you want your best player handling it. Seems like the same situation unfolded vs Toledo except I thought the inability to make a FT late was a bigger factor. I hope the rest of the MAC didnt get a template to beat NIU from this game in a "hack-a-bowie" strategy.

I don't think the MAC needs a template to beat us.

RE: Toledo
The Toledo game came down to missing three layups (Nader twice and Balls) and two free throws (Aksel and JJ) after taking the lead on a three by Nader. They did not try to run out the clock they missed some shots they should have made. Nader's layups where heavily contested but should have converted at least one of them and Balls missed a wide open layup. I think the point guards are playing a better. This is MM second year. Why are will taking about firing him. He has had two recruiting classes. He kept the three players who can play last year (Nader and the twins) and discarded the rest. The same thing will happen this year. Springs had his heart in Mississippi all along. If he could not stay the full year when he was playing regularly it is best for NIU to be able to pick up another player. I do not believe MM could not keep him. I think Springs quit when his playing time was reduced when Nader came back. He could make a three and create his own shot but he had trouble running the offense and playing defense. MM has NIU on the right track. This year has been better than any year in the Patton years. With Highsmith and Pete coming in next year along with some other recruit since somebody else will leave most likely (Christian ??) we should have possibly two seniors, four juniors, three sophomores and a few freshman. That should be a team that can compete a bit better than the past few years. MM will get it done.

Oh I know. I just like him as a person. Seems like a good kid. As far as playing abilities he needs to be able to covert at the line. No questions asked.

RE: Toledo
Some of you guys are amazing.....amazingly negative.....Nader had a double double and was just named MAC PLayer of the Week and you can criticize him.....wow

As far as pressure, Tom Izzo said "it will take 3-4 years to get things turned around at NIU" so you, Chi, know more hoops than Izzo?

And nobody played 4 corners--that was pre-shot clock Tarheels....spreading the floor, when we were in the double bonus is the exact right thing to do....with a 3 point lead under 2 1/2 minutes Nader missed a layup---spreading the floor got a LAYUP--MM can't make the layup for you. then under two minutes, still with a two point lead, Kevin missed a 10 footer that he has consistently made all year--ANOTHER GOOD SHOT....sometimes the shots don't go, not the kids' fault if they are good shots and surely NOT the coach's fault. Monty's offensive scheme got both those shots--if one goes, we win... when bolin made a layup off the offensive set with 32 seconds left, NIU was only down two...

"continue to bring in freshman" that is how you build a program....last year's frosh class brought in Nader and both grays--two starters for sure...this year's class brought in Bowie (a starter who will be a very good MAC player) Mader (who was hurt this game) and both point guards and Mike Davis who had a huge deflection with under 30 sec to play to give us a shot to come back.. they lost quitter springs who didn't get enough time or shots and didn't want to stay around to work to earn them....

And YES, offense/defense late in the game is called coaching...the Mike Davis sub resulted in a huge turnover and was the exact right move...also, if you were paying attention, Chi, you would have known that Gray had 4 fouls and fouled out and Nader and Bowie had four fouls down the stretch when they had to pressure and even take fouls. Even amongst the frosh, some are better defenders (Davis) than others....I am glad you were not on the bench, Chi, we wouldda lost by 25...

and nobody "iced" the ball....they spread the floor...got the ball in the hands of their best scorer who won the game before for them...which upperclassmen would you play Coach Iba? Nixon..oh you forgot, he is HURT. AC? he is pretty darn good defensively but struggles on the offensive end where NIU has trouble scoring anyway. Bolin play 37 minutes meaning, if you are not hurt and you are an upperclassman who can play both ends, you get a helluva lot of minutes....again, WHICH upperclassmen did YOU want to play?

Did you not watch the game? Balance? NIU had 3 guys in double figures...As far as "featuring" someone more, the best player and scorer is Nader...Bolin is scottie pippin--a great all around player but he defers--it isn't like the coaches have not implored him for a year and a half to get more aggressive offensively but he lacks the confidence in his one on one skills to attack as much as he needs to--it is improving--18 points on 6 shots..awesome.

it is not "yelling" at the point guards--it is coaching the freshman--imploring them to do what has been practiced.
The plan for next year is for the current guys to improve as much between this year and next as the did from last year. and to add a big scorer/point guard who can shoot...and probably another wing scorer or two.

You say we need to develop players and then ***** because MM is developing them by playing them, coaching them, subbing in for them (do you watch the assistants coaching them up when they come out of the game?)

You really have no clue, do you, Chi? " Bolin killed us at the line" HUH? He was 6 of 8, played 37 minutes and missed a ft AFTER he got an offensive rebound with a minute left--his other miss was at 6 minutes...hardly killing us...

as far as Hack a bowie, darryl missed a ft less than a minute into the game, another at the 19 minute mark of the second half and his last missed ft was with almost 13 minutes left....I applaud him for getting to the line, it gives the other team foul trouble and gets NIU in bonus quicker....also, you criticized MM for offense/defense but free throw shooting determines that as well and DB was subbed for to use his length and athleticism on defense and subbed out to get more fire power in on offense later in the game...

You need to take some coaching classes or read some books as you have no business criticizing this coach with your very ill-informed, arm chair second guessing.

RE: Toledo
First point: Only criticize me for what I said. You are lumping people together there.
Ok, then, as to the rest, let's not get caught up on semantics. I called it four corners, you said it's not. I know it's not the tarheel four corner from back in the day. That wasn't really my point. My point was he took the air out of the ball. If you think he didn't, go back and watch the replay. You would be just wrong to say it. Of course, once you lose the lead, which they quickly did, you don't stay in that offense! I didn't say they did! But I disagree that it is the right thing to do in the first place.

As far as playing upper classmen, I know we have practically none. THAT was my point. Of course we need to bring in freshmen! LOL! But hopefully they will become sophmores, and so on. I do not think replacing freshmen with freshmen is going to get us anywhere.

Lastly, I don't usually critize players. So I'm not going to address that. But I stick by my questioning of a coach that calls that offense-- one that relies on one player. If it works, great. If it doesn't, then you better be able to answer some questions. If not, then you're not ready to be a head coach. I don't question MM's theories. But I question their application to our situation, and I question the results. The jury is out and questions are legit. Let's hope we get some good answers. Raising questions is not a problem. Not giving a **** is a problem, so be careful what you wish for.
