With 35 bowls, you have to be fairly bad not to.

Going "Bowling" doesn't have the same panache as the good old days.

+1

I vaguely remember when out team went 10-2 , beat a ranked Alabama and Maryland and never went too a Bowl. How easily we forget.
Bowling means extra practice time and is a very big deal still.
How many times has the Illini gone Bowling in the last five years?

They suck

But they are ranked higher then us in the CFN preseason polls.
Have incredible sport facilities and can pay their coach over $1M a year.

Bowling is crap...our new benchmark should be a top #25 ranking. The bowls will fall as they will, with all the auto tie ins, unless we bcs were always destined for crap....I was playing NCAA '13 (with updated rosters as of this year) last night and in 2014-15 season Ark St. was in the National Championship. Yes I know this is fake, but now they get an SEC team into their homefield?! WTF, they were a D1-AA school 20 years ago. Just a senseless rant, that is all, thank u

I agree with that thought. Top 25 should be our new bar. Unless you are on probabation a top 25 team will always go bowling and most likely in a better place as the match-up will become more desirable from a marketing standpoint. Our benchmark should be as a consistent top 25 program. If we hit that pretty much everything else falls in.

Like I said, there weren't even close to 35 bowls then. The MAC had 1 tie-in, not 3 tie-ins plus secondary agreements.

MAC had two tie-inns. Thought they were roughly the same number of Bowls then.
The MAC just got the bottom end in a very bad way.

Credit Joe Novak that they changed the system to give good MAC teams a chance.
In those days a 6-6 BCS team would be picked over a 10-2 MAC team.

Yup the Motor City Bowl (now Pizza) and GMAC (now GoDaddy)

Miami (MAC Champ) went to the GMAC
BGSU (West Champ) went to Detroit

There were 28 bowls then. So not all that many fewer, but unless they get rid of bowls it's much less likely that a 10-2 MAC team would not get a bowl. If it's even possible.

Last season if it were not for the MANY at large spots San Jose St would have been at 10 wins and sitting at home.

Why were there so many at-large spots? Was last season unusual in that respect?

I don't know...however...

Last year the only team that was selected as a 100% large team was Illinois. They were picked by the Military Bowl then swapped with the Kraft Bowl for Toledo which was a secondary tie in with the MAC.

All the other *,**,*** were secondary tie-ins

Whether they are primary tie-ins or secondary though, a bowl game is a bowl game. When you have 70 teams in bowl games and teams under .500 can't get in one (without a waiver) it's tough for a top team from even the MAC to not get a bowl nowadays.

But anyway, back to the topic, I wish we could get the occasional name-brand team to play us at home.

The Sun Belt also needs more OOC games now since FAU and MTSU are leaving immediately and the impending drop in league membership. That could create some challenges and/or cause them to secure games they may not normally have played.
NIU is probably in that neighborhood already. The assts made ~ 800k in 2010 and I'm sure that's gone up. Doeren was at ~420k base last year. Anybody have the current figures?
