What's gone wrong in basketball this year? Blaine Taylor seems like a very good coach. Why are you 2-17? Injuries? Grade casualties? Poor recruiting? Inexperience?

RE: Old Dominion fans
Blaine Taylor coaches a system. Unfortunately this year we have 6 players who are completely new to the system (5 freshman 1 senior-transfer), 3 players who only have 1 year playing experience in the system (2 RS sophomores, 1 Junior-Transfer), and the other 2 (RS Senior and RS Junior) just aren't that good.

We are also redshirting 2 other freshman other than the five mentioned previously.

Recruiting has been a big problem. There have been some injuries but not enough to explain this.

Can you describe the system?

The System is: Defense and Rebounding and to hell if you can shoot. He would love to win a game 42-41. Ugly basketball and not fun to watch.

Please read the "fire Blaine Taylor " thread. You'll get an earful. Suffice it to say Taylor has not been getting it done on the recruiting trail for several years now and the results are now showing.

Maybe ODU and UAB fans can meet up at a bar somewhere to commiserate.

Recruiting has been a big problem. There have been some injuries but not enough to explain this.

That's a great start, but there is more. We graduated two 4 player classes in a row. And of the 8 players, I think 4 or 5 were 5th year seniors. That coupled with several bad years of recruiting that should have helped with the transition but didn't. We lost 3 players in the last two years that should have been the more experienced players for us this year as compared to the three freshmen that are getting a lot of minutes this season.

Regarding "the system", Blaine Taylor is a defense first guy. And much of that is a team oriented defense that takes time to perfect. Can't put a bunch of young players our there and execute as evident by how many points we give up in the final 5 seconds of the shot clock. His offensive sets are very rigid and not free flowing. Again, it takes a seasoned player and team to execute it with any decent degree of success.

So it is the perfect storm: Graduate approximately 36 years of program experience in the last two years, bad recruiting on the backfill, and a large number of program newcomers = a whole sh*tload of losses.

USM lost 4 of their 5 top scorers from last years team. Only two players with any real contributions last year are back, Mills and Watson. Considering all the new players and the new system, what Donnie Tyndall has accomplished so far this year at USM is one of the best coaching jobs I have personally seen.

Tyndall got his transfers and new players to buy in totally and it is paying off. I don't know how the season will end, but it has been a really masterful coaching job so far. Now we just have to find a way to keep him.
