I've always argued it is nothing but a positive for your program to be ranked. Just the level of exposure it gives you alone is worth a great deal. I have never understood the thinking of those that want to "fly under the radar." That is the same as not existing in the minds of the national sports media and college basketball fans. I want to be ranked every week and as high as possible.

I can see the positives in both. I do like the idea of flying under the radar and surprising everyone. On the other hand, you also want the exposure and attention.
But, do you want the attention just because everyone else is a bit down. Do you want the attention when everyone is strong?

Yep, more than anything else exposure is why it is important. Top 25 scores scroll all over the place. Has to be a slow basketball day for them to scroll scores of teams not in the top 25.

Definitely makes it easier to find your games when you're looking for them on sports sites. It has been humiliating these last few years to have to click on C-USA to do so. LOL

RE: Interesting story on the importance of being ranked in the polls
Since we are continually reminded of the Calipari 3-4 yr run by the media & some here expecting it to be the new continuum, it is impossible for a program of Memphis' stature to "fly under the radar" even in down years with few or no signature wins (for example, winning 23-25+ games). Memphis is recognized much like a ranked team even when we aren't. That is not to discount the benefits of actually being ranked, as has been mentioned, but Memphis is known & well thought of, so there is little to no chance we fly under the radar, especially given our recruiting success & large fan following. Not unlike UK & UNC this year with few or no big wins where no one takes them lightly or doesn't respect their ability.

I wouldn't put Memphis in the same category as UK and UNC in terms of being unable to fly under the radar as unranked teams. I think with Calipari gone, with Memphis rarely on ESPN, with the Tigers still in this crappy conference, with our new young coach, Memphis is more of a curosity. I don't think we are considered to be a great program having a down year. Every once in a while we get a mention or a blurb, but it mainly has to do with the fact that the team is winning 80% of their games this season and the sports media and other fans wonder every once in a while if we are really any good or just a fraud when it comes time to taking on quality opponents. The only way Memphis really gets back in the spotlight is if they make a great run in the Dance.

I only put Memphis with UK & UNC "this year" and only then in terms of lacking quality wins. But I do believe Memphis remains very well respected by its opposition, based upon its number of wins, it stature as a major program & its level of recruiting success. Our opposition gets up to play us & fans nationwide know the Memphis name, at least to the level of not being able to fly under the radar.

There will be kids graduating college in a few months who have likely never seen us play a tournament game unless they watched when they were in high school -- probably as a junior. The Memphis name needs some major pumping up.

Recruits seem to know us or JP is even doing a better job than we think.........
Making a general statement, can't have it both ways, either we are a known & respected program which enables us to recruit top classes or JP is recruiting beyond the program reputation.

Memphis vs St. Louis was one of 32 games played first round (or whatever you want to call it with the play-in games) last year. The year before it was vs Arizona, but still only one of 32 games. The majority of people casually watching the tournament did not tune in to see either of those games. How many of the other 62 hours of basketball each year did you personally watch on the first weekend of the tournament?
