C7 - UC and UConn will NOT be part of it
Not that we are shocked by this... but I have it on great authority that Dayton and Xavier are a done deal to the C7. Probably Butler as well... to go with 2 others (St. Louis and ???).

The sticking point is that the C7 want 65% of the TV revenue, while the other 5 would split the last 35%. From what I was told, there is a memorandum of understanding between Dayton and the C7 and the holdup on announcements is the TV money. 9+% for the C7 vs 7% for the other 5... no going over well. The power is in the other 5 to get the same share as there just aren't enough options for the C7 to go with after Dayton, Xavier, Butler, and St. Louis. The 5th is going to be an interesting addition... my source didn't have information beyond UD and Xavier, but he surmised that Butler was part of it as well.

Ken Broo was on with Willie and FWIW he is hearing the C7 + Creighton, Butler and X. They feel Xavier will lock up SW Ohio and Dayton brings nothing... if they were to expand more the next 2 would be SLU and Dayton... again thats per Ken Broo on WLW.

Glad to hear UC wont be a part of that... for now I trust that Mick and others are right and UC will find a better home for all sports.

Creighton makes complete sense as an addition to St. Louis. The 65/35 split points directly to a 12 team conference, not 10. I trust the guy... he asked specific questions and got specific answers (nor would he had any reason to make up any of the information he told me). He is also in a position to get this information as it effects their academic peers, which is probably why it accidentally got on their schedule for discussions amonst high level academic leaders at UD.

On a side note, anyone who thinks that Xavier locks up southwest Ohio is an idiot. Xavier has almost zero fans in Dayton (UC has a LOT more), while Dayton controls the college basketball market here. They would make more sense for TV revenue that Xavier is you go by ratings and not market size (I know, market size is everything). Let me put it this way... WHIO TV in Dayton pays CBS College Sports to air games on local over-the-air TV here, while FS Ohio pays CBS College Sports for the rights to XU. You are only allowed to preempt network television a set number of times without penalty from CBS, if they are willing to use all of their preemptions then I'd assume that means they are drawing some good ratings.

While Xavier is certainly a crown jewel outside of what was the "big 6," I'm not sure if they are looked upon that much more highly than Dayton except to the Xavier supporters in Cincinnati. Dayton plays in a bigger arena that has always had 12K+ whether Dayton won 3 games or 25 games in a season. Their support has never waned... something that can't be said about UC or XU sadly.

1 last thing... and I can't speak for sure, but I've always been told that there was a gentlemen's agreement once Dayton and Xavier came back together in the A10 that neither school would ever leave the other one high and dry again. Obviously administrations have changed, so maybe it is not in play any more, but I'd venture a guess that the agreement is still strong between 2 schools with such a long history (and they don't play football to split them up like other "rivals").

We had something similar with UL I believe.

Apparently these things aren't worth the paper they aren't printed on.

I heard we had something with UL after the Metro/Great Midwest split.... you're right, those kind of agreements go out the window when something lucrative comes your way.

Working at the base here in Dayton I work with lots of UD grads and a few are season ticket holders. I have been to quite a few games and the crowds and fans are great. My biggest beef with the alumni at work to a man are UD basketball fans and tO$U fans... I always remind them who their alma mater is playing that week and that tO$U is not their team... of course I would leave them alone if they weren't always talking crap about Bearcat football (they leave Bearcat BB alone as our I believe 14 - 2 record against UD under Huggins, Kennedy and Cronin)

From a fan following Dayton brings a lot to the table as far as a conference mate... they also host the play in game every year (because their fans support basketball). From what I hear they did have some lean attendance years a few years ago when they sucked, but other than that they are well supported.

Creighton in Nebraska seems pretty far west for the C7... UD would seem a better geographic fit.

I've been to UD games every year since a little kid... including when they went 3-25 in the early/mid 1990's. They ALWAYS had at least 10K fans... usually more like 12K in UD Arena. They are MUCH better fans than UC, Xavier, or Ohio State when it comes to supporting their basketball team.

Plus UD Arena is a great place to watch college basketball and it has aged incredibly well.

They know how to put on an event... hence the reason they have the play in games and have hosted more NCAA tourney games there than any other venue.

Completely agree about UD arena. And definitely, people in Dayton could care less about Xavier.

Agreed, I thought they had a drought but I could be wrong. They've been in the top 25 for average attendance every year since 1978 with the following exceptions:

1982, 1983, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1992,1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012

And to be fair starting in 1990 you had to average 12,000+ to be rated in the top 25 and since 2009 you must average 13,000+

I hate it when you guys sidetrack a thread.

03-lmfao

Did I ever tell you about the time I spent the night with the Dionne quintuplets? They were much older than me, and boy did I learn some things.

Oh, what a night
Late December back in '63
What a very special time for me
As I remember what a night

Quote:INDIANAPOLIS - The University of Dayton finished in the Top 30 in men's basketball attendance for the 15th straight season in 2011-12, according to a report by the NCAA.

Just sayin'....

Edit:

Quote:Arena Attendance

As of 2010, the University of Dayton has ranked in the top 25 in the nation for attendance at the arena 18 times. 10th during 1972, 1974. 17th during 1978. 18th during 2005. 20th during 1979, 1987. 21st during 1985, 1986. 22nd during 1980. 23rd during 2002, 2006. 24th during 1988, 2000, 2001, 2003. 25th during 1981, 1984, 2004.[5]

I can't believe I'm sticking up for UD fans here... some of the most idiodic fans I've ever met! They are great at showing up for their team, however.

12K+ last season to UC's 8K+... 4,000 more fans per game against an A10 schedule in a season which they didn't make the NCAA tourney (and UC was a sweet 16 team).

The butts-in-seats attendance was definetly lower in the early/mid 90s. I remember moving down from the 400s to about 10 rows up to sit with my uncle all season without a problem. The attendance numbers are always high because they sell about 10k season tickets. People know that if they don't renew there tickets that they will be up in the rafters for decades.
