I may be way too optimistic but I do believe if we had a decent team on tv that wasnt going up against something like Alabama/LSU, Memphis would get a pretty decent rating.
During football season I am asked on a regular basis how the team looks and I hear comments all the time about "if I ever saw them listed on tv I would watch".

Plenty of SEC lovers in our market, for sure, but I recall a Commercial Appeal survey a year or so ago which showed that Tiger "fans" outnumbered Ole Miss and UT-Knoxville fans in this market put together. They may not fill our stadium until the winning gets back up, but they will watch on TV.

RE: .Memphis Is A Top 10 TV Market For College Football
There are plenty of Tiger fans who opt for staying home and watching a top SEC matchup rather than go to the stadium, PAY MONEY for a ticket, and watch a mean almost nothing Memphis game.
The #'s of these fans attending vs. watching the tube fluctuate depending on who the Tigers are playing.
Football fans in Memphis, by and large, would LOVE to have a Tiger team playing very good teams to go watch on Sat. afternoon.
Those that don't attend, will watch on tv, while switching to the SEC game once in a while.
If the Big12 wants to stomp a giant foot print in SEC territory, we're the perfect choice. It's right in front of them.
However, the perception across the country, as ignorant as it is, is that even with Memphis, the SEC would still be the King in the tv ratings.
This would be true, only because many more SEC games would still be shown here.
However, Big12 could make significant inroads to changing this with showing more games in this market.
Edit: Sorry, guys and gals, I try to write in paragraphs, and when I post, it shows up the way it is.

I agree completely.
And in the bigger picture I dont really think they care if it is Memphis fans watching. If they can get their teams in here on a regular basis they may convert fans to their conference or teams in their conference. Memphis watches college football.

Don't forget that the local tv stations broadcast way into Mississippi and Arkansas for cable subscribers. As far away as Corinth and Tupelo and Jonesboro, and up and down East Arkansas.
But yeah, people in Memphis will watch SEC.
Even in Dallas there is an independent station that airs an SEC game every week, in addition to the one that CBS airs.

RE: .Memphis Is A Top 10 TV Market For College Football
I seem to remember Lapides stating the rating for the first NO Bowl appearance was remarkably high in the Memphis market. It was on ESPN 2 and rivaled the rating for the 1998 Tennessee Arkansas (Stoerner fumble game), which was a CBS game and the highest registered in the Memphis market.
