UTD: UAB's Next Sports Arch-Rival...
Let's try this one on for size...With Memphis leaving Conference USA and UAB being moved to the newly re-aligned East Division of the Conference, which school, IYO, will become UAB's next arch-rival in sports? Southern Miss is staying put in the west and I assume that means the Blazers will only face them once every other year from that point on (feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, like some of y'all did with the Football hypothetical - 03-lmfao It's alright, I ain't mad, there are times I appreciate brutal honesty, this is one of them)...So who becomes the Blazers new rival in the not too distant future in Conference USA???

Thanks again for wading in...

Charlotte or Old Dominion. More for basketball reasons than football.

We might be lucky enough to have more than 1 intense rivalry. ODU & Charlotte are the natural assumptions but the proximity of MTSU makes me think that could be a good series as well.

I'll say Charlotte comes put just ahead of the others. I don't remember the days of being in conference with Charlotte but the 49er fans have a certain online demeanor that makes me think there will be heated discussions.

Rivalries are more often circumstantial than chosen, but we will have a chance to see one or more develop over the rest of this decade as member teams come our way.

MTSU due to proximity and history of playing them in past years. However, in basketball we will once again hate UNCC and will develop a hatred of Old Dominion.

Good opinions, thanks to those of you that have offered. @BBF: Interesting theory about how rivalries are circumstantial as opposed to chosen. Birmingham and Memphis for as long as I can remember, have been rivals in sports every time the two cities shared a league of some kind in a given sport (first one I recall was in the WFL with the Americans and the Southmen), face it, they (Memphis and Birmingham) were destined to become rivals, and since most of you so far have offered up Charlotte as a strong possibility in this regard, who am I to go against the grain? Charlotte is on my list, too (being that UAB and Charlotte cross swords in basketball back in the day, I think in the Sun Belt, even though most Blazer faithful back then may have tabbed VCU or South Alabama as our biggest rival), add these 2 schools as well: Louisiana Tech and Middle Tennessee State.

Excellent observation. Far as ODU goes, I can't wait for our Women's Basketball team to cross paths with them, given ODU's past history of strong Women's hoops, I can definitely see a rivalry brewing there. Their football team will be tough as well. Charlotte's going to stir a thousand ghosts.

Like they said. The old Sun belt rivalries will be renewed and throw in So Piss and MTSU. I'm sure it will get hot fast.

I don't remember his name but the last couple of years that UNCC was a member of CUSA v1.0, they had this kid with huge calves that could shoot anywhere on the court and sink a 3. He beat us single handedly multiple times during those years, and I credit him for causing my own hatred of UNCC.

Lots of good options... Charlotte, ODU, MTSU, Southern Miss. Of the bunch, I would say MTSU and Southern Miss will be the biggest football rivals but Charlotte and ODU for hoops.

Me too. However right now, USM is better at basketball than football. Perhaps they are becoming a basketball school.

Ask their fans, I'm sure their opinion is different.

It depends on what division UAB ends up in. If/when Tulsa goes to the nbe there is a real possibility UAB could end up in the west

My ears may misrepresent me, but I thought I heard a report on radio a couple of days ago that UAB was going to be moved to the newly re-aligned East Division. Southern Miss would remain in the West, which means UAB would only play them once every other year. "Sigh"...There goes another rivalry.

They just won Conference USA in football last year. One down year does not all of a sudden make their football program garbage.

It depends on how things play out. Currently, I am guessing things will look like this, but if you take away Tulsa, and add Western Kentucky, UAB going to the west makes sense. It kind of sucks for us, because USM and La Tech are close, and MTSU is also close. We are going to get stuck playing some schools that are far away either way, even though there is a good core of schools a decent drive away.

USM
La Tech
UTEP
Tulsa
UNT
UTSA
Rice

Marshall
UAB
MTSU
FIU
FAU
Charlotte
ODU

USM and UAB are in the east for now. ODU and UNCC additions will shove USM west.

Tulsa's replacement will determine if we are east or west in 2015. Arkansas State or NMSU added and we are East. WKU or Georgia State added and we are West.

I sorry to see southern not in our division but happy about MTSU. Love the town of Murfreesboro. Cannot wait and return to 'Toots' and get some good cooking and friendly staff
