I landed in Toronto an hour before kick-off, and I managed to get through customs, find a place to store my carry-on bags, take a cab to the game, buy a hotdog and a beer and find my seat just in time for the singing of the national anthems. The game started around noon.
Too bad the Huskie Offense sould not show up. Huskies lost 27-3.
That was a very hard game to watch. Just as bad as that Navy game at home. I remember that game was right after that shoe bomber was on that plane heading to Detroit on Christmas that year and it literally took us 3 hours to get from the front door of the airport to the gate. It was the worst airport experience of my life. Just brutal. They wouldn't even let carry ons on the plane and you had to go through this ridiculous 2nd baggage line to check your carry on luggage. Then as we got through security, we went through a third line where they did an extra security check. It was unbearable.
Customs was fun. I had to explain to the customs official why I was visiting Canada. Our conversation went something like this.
Customs: What is the purpose of your visit?
Me: I am here to see the International Bowl.
Customs: What is that?
Me: It's a football game. Go Huskies! (I said while I unzipped my winter jacket to show my Huskie sweatshirt that matched my NIU hat.)
Customs: Football season is over.
Me: It's a bowl game. It's two college teams in a post-season game.
Customs: Canadian Colleges?
Me: No, American colleges. It's Northern Illinois and South Florida.
Customs: Well, what are playing the game here for?
He has just appointed me to be spokesman for the NCAA
Me: I don't know! To foster good relations between the two countries, I suppose.
I made sure to pick up a program at the game, just in case I had to go through a similar interrigation on the way back.
The International Bowl. You talk about an attendance killer. Yep... there aren't enough bowl games in the U.S. - let's schedule one in CANADA. That way not only do you have to travel there but you need a passport to go!
That was a trip from hell. I made the mistake of leaving the kids ids at home. At customs, we all had to get out of the car and open our suitcases. They searched our car with dogs. Customs pushed the kids into a room. They started screaming, my wife started screaming at the guards. They shoved her into a room, she started screaming at me when I told her to calm down. Customs thought we had stolen our kids. One hour later we were on our way. For two days the kids and wife were terrified on crossing back into USA. Coming home, USA Customs checked my id and waved us on.

Wow, I can't believe so many people are complaining about the International Bowl. Yeah, the game sucked, but that was probably my favorite bowl of the 3 I've been to (Poinsettia, Independence, International). We went to the Bulls/Pistons game in Detroit New Years Eve day and then Toronto on NYE was an epic party. Surprised there are so many negatives being said about it.

In all reality, why are you (7) so fixated on tickets sold ? You sound like the Rainman, International Bowl 960 tickets sold, Orange Bowl 3065 tickets sold etc. Concentrate on learning to count cards instead of tickets.

I went through something along these lines; make me get out of the car, dog sniff etc. They also made me dump out my McDonalds fountain Coke and ice, just in case I was hiding drugs at the bottom of the cup.....

RE: What was the worst thing you did ...
Canada customs made me pull my pants down, bend over, and grab my ankles. The guard proceeded to give me a most comprehensive rectal exam for a half hour. I thanked him when he was done, but unfortunately he is no longer doing these exams. To this day, I still place flowers on the poor guy's grave. I'm sure he and his family would have appreciated if I had not gone to the International Bowl.

No, you're fine. But, why in the hell didn't your wife join you at that blessed event? Didn't she realize how important that game was?

OK ...let me get some clarification here. Your child had already been born? You didn't leave your poor wife in labor, right? So if said child had already been born...child & wife are in the hospital doing fine...you had to go home to eat, sleep a little because you were probably up all night, shower, change clothes, call people with the good news, right?
So if you chose NOT to sleep to attend the Maryland game ...that's not so bad. I don't think you're going to hell. And hopefully your wife is a Huskie fan and understands you traded sleep for the game...

My son, scheduled to be induced at 4pm that day, showed up at 820 am (I'll always be thankful to him for that..) after 14 hours of labor. Stuck around, offered support, showed off son to all the family..At 430 my exhausted wife said "GO!" and promptly fell into an extended sleep w my boy. I drove in a delirium through rush hour traffic and made it to HS exactly at kickoff...you know the rest!
One of best days of my life!

Perfect! and no lifetime of hell for you - from "ditching" your wife since she told you to go.
I do like your original version tho. Funny - and sounds totally dedicated! lol
I can see why it was one of the best days - you became a father to a son AND NIU beat Maryland! It was a dream come true.

Flew to Spokane via Seattle, rented a car, and drove to Moscow, Idaho - home of the Kibbie Dome. No wait a minute, that's one of the best things I've ever done!
