RE: New UAB President
The new Dean SOM may be as important a hire to UAB athletics as the President. Both will need to be very very good at bring in new researchers and thus the related dollars. Due to the tea party and other financial pressures -pure science research dollars as a whole can be expected to decline. We will need to grab a bigger piece of the smaller pie and UABs research ranking(percentage) has been declining.

Remember athletics is funded about 65 % by these indirect research dollars. As much as we rightfully gripe about lack of support on the OCS - we have been fortunate to have been able to run a growing deficit for years with support of our administration

I still don't see why our deficit is so much more of a big deal than other schools. Less than 20 D1 schools actually make money on athletics.

I think Watts will be a good hire though. I've met him before and he is a nice guy. I know he was one of the primary donors to get the new Alumni House built. As for athletics, I don't think you have to worry about that. You wouldn't see all those "Sponsored by UAB Medicine" ads everywhere at games if he didn't sign off on it.

Tea Party? So 4 or 5 people out of the several hundred in congress are the problem?

I didn't realize the Tea Party was running the ship.

There are 49 members in the house and 4 in the senate. That's not including those who allied with the tea party that are not part of the caucus. You also have to include all of the non caucus members scared of being primaried. Just a bit more influence than 4 or 5 members

"Sponsored by UAB Medicine" means the UAB Health System, of which the Dean of the SOM is not the leader (though he's a part of it and probably is involved in those specific decisions at some point)

We fund a lot of that deficit ultimately from research, and that's why I agree with Witt on greatly increasing undergrad enrollment to broaden the funding base (and made it a central part of my pitch for the presidency - which I wrote before I knew Witt wanted it too, so it probably just came across as lame ass-kissing). It would be less of a deal if we had 25K or so enrollment.

Quote:I didn't realize the Tea Party was running the ship.

Numbers, no. Influence, still strong. Obama may have won the last couple of rounds but "cut spending" will continue to get at least lip service, and research is a lot easier to cut than most other programs (lacking the same relationship to its constituency as, say, school lunches or the F35 fighter plane).

Quote:Autocrats (like the BOT) are not famous for hiring or promoting strong subordinates who might pose problems for them to handle in the future. They are much more comfortable with "YES men", even when they are wrong.

While I agree in principle, there was a deal cut here to give us "one of our own" and make us (UAB stakeholders) shut the hell up about their autocracy.

The UAB presidency is not an admin post so much as it is one of cat-herding. Witt wants a large undergrad enrollment (and I agree with his reasoning) and strong athletics is a major component of attracting same. They would not have made this choice if they planned to continue down the Finis path; but on the other hand, they didn't pick me, either.

Does anyone think that having a male President might make it easier to deal with the BOT when it comes to athletics? The people on the BOT who seem to do all the talking with regards to sports are guys.

Didn't it come down to Ann Reynolds and Bernie Machen for UAB President once? Oh what might have been...

Especially since the one advocate UAB had in Washington has abandoned us. Shelby is firmly out of the funding Alabama universities game.

I wonder who the new dean of the SOM will be?

Rumor is that the chairman of anesthesiology is the front runner

Hopefully not the same one that died of the flu a few weeks ago, 'cuz if so I think we have a new frontrunner.

Nevermind that was neurology.

You would think that the big bad evil old Tea Party was taking down the country.
Everyone just totally ignore the out of control spending that is going on by the president, it does not matter. Instead blame the protesters who believe that the government should act responsibly with everyone's money.

Yeah, that's the ticket.

The Tea Party is not a party, it is instead a belief by some people that we are way over taxed and big government leads to little freedom by the citizens.

As we have seen in the last election, it is a very slim minority of the people, unfortunately.
