Defense Defense Defense
Back from the game, it was a good game to watch, except for the losing part.
I enjoy Basketball, fast or slow, don't matter to me, win or lose by 1 or 21 no difference.
The team needed this win badly, and I felt if they could get a stop, the chance to win was there for the taking.
There are many things that could be said about the team, but the most glaring is the Defense is bad.
I thought about the makeup of the Coaching staff and the Coach, and unlike our previous coaches, and correct me if I am wrong, Coach Hasse wasn't the top coach on his previous coaching stops.
Prior to becoming head coach at UAB, Murry had a great teacher and alot of responsibility, XCMA played and coach for Richardson for almost 20 years if I am not mistaken, and XCMD was a top Asst and head coach prior to coming to UAB.
Except for Murry"s early teams, I can just about tell you who coach the defense for our previous staff, and lets not forget, the previous staffs were all older and had many years under their coaching belts.
Now our current staff is very young, and thats not bad, however the attitude toward defense appears to be lacking.
I noticed like I believe others did, that we were beaten over and over by the pick and roll.
It can be a defensive nightmare if you cannot defend it. Well we went to a zone to control the play, and Lebo went small, and forced us to man up. But the damage had been done and we never recovered.
This isnt a bad team, its a team learning a system, yep some here may say, make the system fit your personnel, well thats okay for the short term, but I always say, if its got to be done eventually, might as well do it now.
I look forward to watching this team when the system is in place, when our personnel are good, better and best.
This team and staff want to win, and they are trying hard, I AM STAYING ON THE HASSE WAGON.

I'd hate to be that guy and I know I've probably done it as well, but do you mind spacing out "paragraphs" so others can read it easier.

Good post. I was able to read it without paragraphs. You are right. This is the least experienced coach we have ever had. Davis was a head coach at a high level. Murry and Anderson were assistants but were lead assistants. There will be growing pains, but this staff has huge amount of potential. I actually fear losing Ehsan too soon.

I will now add a paragraph for UABrandon's sake.

This team has the potential to be a good team, but they have to learn how to win. They have to become confident. So does Haase. He has been a coach at Kansas and North Carolina, two programs that has probably never lost five straight. He is learning on the job. As fans, we have to be patient and supportive. Don't give up on this season.

Here is another paragraph for Brandon.

Go Blazers. Beat Houston.

RE: Defense Defense Defense
They say offense sell tickets, but defense win championships. The team is scoring enough to be exciting to watch, we have several players who play good defense.

ECU was a tall team, I felt early we was going to have to double down in the paint, I also was hoping ASW got a few minutes, but felt in a close game, he was too much a liability, 2 more big men and we compete in the paint, and become a hard match up.

Blazers, last night we were one big body away from winning the game, PP who started the game and was playing well offensively, wasnt in the game at crunch time, I believe it was because of who do you take out in a tight game, with limited personnel.

Offensively PP and Jordan have similiar skill sets, and Jordan was on and aggressive offensively.

I feel good about this team direction under Hasse, and when I say team its a living term, in that next year and so on, we will be ok.

Paragraphs brought to you by Brandon, and people remember a mind is a terrible thing to waste.

RE: Defense Defense Defense
First game i have been able to attend this year and my impression is that we are a step slow on defense. We would probably be a better zone defense team but that isn't the style we are trying to play. That being said if Fahro and Rucker hit some put backs in the first half we probably would have won by 10+

Our failure to hit key shots (and too many of the others as well) is why we have the record we have. Open, short jumpers and lay-ups that we have rather consistently missed can't be blamed on "defense". All any coach can do from the bench is call the play to get the best possible shot. He can't shoot the ball himself. If our shots start falling in rather than out, our record will probably improve. Defense is easier to play from the lead rather than from many points down.

RE: Defense Defense Defense
Enjoyed some of the game and yelled my head off,, mostly at the refs... SHEESH they were BAAAAAAAAAAD!!!. Loved the effort and the offensive productivity, albeit not enough of the latter. The early missed layups, putbacks, etc really hurt us when we were actually dominating the game otherwise. Our guards still managed to throw away lots of balls, which drives me to cuss and stomp in the aisle. Maybe we can hang one on the coogs this Saturday,,, I sure hope so.

RE: Defense Defense Defense
The refs were baaaad.

We missed a ton of layups early.

We couldn't hit the key shot at crunch time, even though they were good shots for the most part.

We couldn't get the key stop.

It was a game we shoulda, coulda, woulda won but....

I love Coach Hasse' bench demeanor. He is very involved, actively coaching, his competitive spirit is intense, you can tell he wanted to win very BADLY, he cares about his guys and desperatley wants a good result and happy locker room for their happiness.

Haase will get it done given adequate support, and that means fans, budget and facilities. He has a very strong work ethic, unlike our previous coach. He's not used to losing, and I guess that is a good thing, but it's got to be a new experience for him.

We don't have a deep enough bench to play the way he would like to.

On TV, Haase didn't look so active during the Southern Miss game. I started to wonder if he had a stomach virus or something.

Heck, it was probably indigestion from watching the game.

This is true, and it's been true in other games this season too.

This is very true. We missed plenty of layups and putbacks to win this game.
