Good sportscasting is becoming a lost art. There was a time when you could listen to a game and follow it. Too much cutesy Jim Rome crap now. Just call the damn game accurately is alll I ask

You are so right, I often think of Green Bay announcer Ray Scott, Hall of Fame anouncer who called 4 super bowls and 7 NFL championship games. Starr................ Dowler................. Touchdown, Green Bay.

I must assume you are being facetious, but in case you are not, How will we ever be able to fight off the major networks for his services?

RE: In defense of Wolo.
The difference between the examples provided by the OP and Wolo are not that Wolo might say some similar things but the issue is Wolo says things that are incorrect and some times it seems intentional. Of course, as an out of towner, I don't "get" to listen to him this year with all the black out & restriction BS.........

Damn, I spend half an hour writting this and the comment is about paragraphs . LOL thanks

To spend 30 minutes of your life, that's 30 minutes you'll never get back, defending Wolo as an announcer is admirable...I don't understand why anyone would do that but it's a noble gesture on your part

Did you not read what I wrote? I was talking to my son last week about the dumb things sport announcers say and I thought Id like to post that . I used the convention of " a defense of Wolo" as a way to do it. As far as defending Wolo; I said nothing in his defense other than there are a lot of not so bright cliche quoting sport announcers that we listen to every day and most of it just goes over people's head who do not stop long enough to analyse what is said. As far as wasting 30 minutes of my life , I didn't have a lot of other things to do at 5 in the morning. I guess I could have read from a book I have started , but chose otherwise. How much time do you spend reading this board and writing post? Do you have nothing better to do?
I am not accused of being noble very often, but thanks.
It also appears that I don't have a lot to do at 3:30 a.m. either.

Some broadcasters get caught far too often in the trap of putting on a show rather than the game being the show. Interestingly enough, those who do the job well are elevated by the game itself. It's a win-win

That said, you have to strike a balance between informative and entertaining. When to get excited, when to not, when to let the crowd tell the story, etc. Same goes for some of the stating the obvious comments like " can tie or take the lead with a 3". Meant for dramatic effect and not to insult the listener's intelligence but can be grossly over used. Be accurate first and foremost and follow the flow/energy of the game.

As long a broadcaster remembers A) the audience being broadcast to and B) that the stars of the show are on the court/field and not in the broadcast booth then the product is usually worth listening to

It's time we give Wolo a long term contract to secure his services.

MAN #1: We need to win more National Titles if we want to be treated like the Dukes of College Basketball.

MAN #2: Duke University?

MAN #1: No, I mean we would be treated like British Royalty.

Geez, some of the stuff people complain about. Announcers make mistakes often, especially when they are expecting a certain outcome. He has the voice for it, does pretty well and loves the Tigers. I don't listen to a lot of the basketball games but do get the radio on for football. He is excitable and does it with emotion. I would take Woloshin over Weedon 6 days a week and twice on Sunday.
