Very nice event held at the Dayton Racquet Club. Dr. Ono, Whit Babcock, Bill Mulvihill (Foundation), Louis Bilionis (Law Dean), James Winkle (Pharmacy Dean), and Myron Hughes (UCAA) were all in attendance. Reportedly it was the largest gathering of UC supporters from the Miami Valley in the last 25 years.
President Ono talked extensively about the academic plan that he co-authored with President Williams. That plan is the framework for everything he does at UC. He spoke highly about the role athletics holds today - how it brings students from separate disciplines together. He mentioned conference realignment as something he is not worried about because UC will always compete at the highest levels. He said that athletic success on the field is a significant factor when students make their college choices.
His love for UC was evident as he once again mentioned his desire to stay for at least 10 years. "UC needs stability in the President's office, and I want to provide this great University that stability." One gentleman even asked Dr. Ono where he could get that great UC tie he was wearing. In true Santa fashion, he immediately took it off and gave it to the guy.
Whit Babcock opened his remarks thanking all the Dayton area fans for fighting traffic and making it consistantly down to Bearcat games. Your welcome. He said that since we always make it to Clifton, he wanted to return the favor and drive to Dayton for a visit. Obviously spoke highly of MC and TT. He also commented that UC was proactively working to be in the best conference situation. Privately, he agreed that the athletics department's marketing initiatives need to grow outside I-275.
I read today on Santa's FB page that 60+ students from Centerville High School alone come to UC each year.
The best for me, however, was the mini-Homecoming that the event created. Guys I had classes with in "Engineering Rehab", guys that I served with on IFC, and several others that I had not seen in many years. It was great to see so many just a few miles away. I've got a few more lunches on my schedule now.
Sorry I didn't catch up with you, namrag. Hopefully, you enjoyed the evening as much me.
