Are you?

No, but I like the idea of the Chance program and the competitive edge it gives NIU in FB recruiting.

I think programs like that have benefits, but it shouldnt be at NIU. There should be an interview process first for kids who are serious about going to college and need that chance rather than just letting anyone come who signs up. Second, the state should have the program at SIU, EIU or WIU instead of NIU. I say this because its farther away from Chicago and less likely for these kids friends who arent in school to come up nonstop and distract them and cause trouble. It would give these kids a better chance of succeeding IMO. Any of the recent alumni or current students know what im talking about. Just check out the rec center all day and then read the police blotter in the Northern Star. Basically everyday it involved kids from Chicago mugging people etc who didnt even goto school at NIU. Im not saying this is 100% on the chance program, but it definitely plays a huge factor. NIU has a negative connotation of being a "ghetto" school. Its sad but true...

Good post. And, it's not just an NIU issue, it's a major contributor to the larger problems in the city of DeKalb.

Its definitely a major issue to the city of DeKalb. Its sad, as an alum i want to brag about NIU when i bring friends up there, but sometimes the image is less than to be desired. I hope they fix this sooner rather than later

+1. I always talk up NIU to friends with college-age kids, but they want nothing to do with NIU for that very reason. Instead, they are sending their kids to schools like EIU and WIU.

Guess the idea of building a train station connecting NIU to DeKalb
will make it easier for fans to travel to games, but then again we have some folks who believe it will make DeKalb ,"easier for gangsters to access" ?? seems we have a conflict on the board.
I know plenty of predominantly white schools("non-ghetto school") where these people can send there kids to.

I am very glad that NIU is not one of them.

Security issues might be eased by student patrols and an NIU police chief whose is not having relations with the students and whose children are not selling dope in DeKalb.

Perhaps if alumni come visit DeKalb, they may be profiled as gangsters. Alumni beware to leave your hoodies at home.

It woud be of interest to me for a Chronicle/Star reporter to ask elected officials in city and county of DeKalb whether or not they favor extending the communter line from Elburn to DeKalb/Sycamore to expidite commercial development and for job creation?

My guess is they see it as a third rail and as an extension of the L.

If I lived in DeKalb/Sycamore, I certainly would not want it. The less connection to the city, the better.

Wait...you want a train to just go from down town DeKalb to NIU?

If you mean NIU to the burbs...then HuskieBob has already explained how this is basically not going to happen any time soon.

Oh no, not again. The last time I asked a paradox a question, they charged me a paradigm.

In all seriousness, I believe that alumni do not return to campus because many of them did not have positive experiences (could be their own fault) and could not wait to get out of NIU. Many had a negative impression of NIU before they enrolled. Many of them seem embarrassed that they "had" to go to NIU. As to Athletics, they view NIU as a small-time school in a small-time conference. I have known people like this, and they make me sick.

Because most of those people had little to no uniquely NIU connection with their time at NIU. We were a suitcase college for so long that so few people actually connected with the university.

The people who enjoyed themselves with something that is uniquely NIU want to come back and typically do. Typically this would be some athletic team, organization or club.

The majority attended classes, went home for the weekend came back, graduated and never looked back.

HuskieJohn thank you very much for all your help.

Allot of good people at NIU.
Like so many alumni I am very proud of the FB success that NIU has had. A great school, an excellent education and a great tradition.

Regarding parking where are the places one can park at during FB games.

Note this is the parking map for the 2012 season. It may change for next season but this will give you an idea. Also note that on Saturdays you can park in the parking garage in the center of campus for free.

I always parked in the old field house parking lot for free. Nobody there to take your money. Easy in easy out.

No. I stopped gambling after I once sped on over to a casino and got 2 tickets by a paratrooper.
