Football Recruiting: The 2010 Class in Review
Ranger's 2010 Recruiting Class Review

My own player rating (based on their impact while playing at UAB):
### - outstanding all-conference quality player
## - multi-year high impact player
# - regular starter or impact player for at least one season.

CNC signed 28 recruits in 2010, including 12 JUCOs. Thirteen players were rated 3-stars by Rivals.

2010 3-star recruits (Rivals rating):
1. #DA Autry (JUCO), LB: Good player who gave us one year, but never quite got it all together before leaving the program his senior year.
2. ###Jamie Bender (JUCO), safety: A beast of a safety, as good as we've had in a while.
3. Quartney Cox (JUCO), OL: Never played, left the team after first year.
4. Jamarious Crusoe, CB: Never played in spite of spending 2 years on campus. Left team in fall of 2012. One of the bigger disapointments of this recruiting class. We really needed a good Fr CB from this class.
5. #Greg Franklin, RB: Very solid player, played as a freshman. Started numerous games over last 2 years before being replaced by Darrin Reaves and Bashr Coles in running back rotation. Rumored to have left the team at the end of 2012 season.
6. Maurice Hayes (JUCO), DL: In spite of making it to campus and deep into fall practice, did not qualify to play at UAB. We needed this guy.
7. ##Darrion Smith (JUCO), C: A great JUCO signee. Solid starter at center for 2 years.
8. #Nolen Smith, WR/TE: Solid player who came on strong in 2011, but sat out 2012 due to injury. There are high hopes for him as a pass receivign TE in his final 2 years under McGee.
9. Emmanul Taylor (JUCO), ATH: Never played, left team.
10. #Chris Walton, DE: Solid player, multi-year starter, a bit slow of foot but consistently aggressive. On the verge of being an impact player but not quite.
11. Desmond Warren, LB: Highly regarded athlete who left program once McGee became HC. Big loss.
12. ###Jackie Williams, WR: Brilliant late signee. Became an impact player as a freshman and has been UAB's most consistent play maker for past 2 years. Could be all conference as a senior if he takes another step forward.
13. Chad Winbush (JUCO), RB: Never made it to campus.

Of 13 three-star recruits, 6 never made it to campus and 8 either didn't make it or left before eligibility expired. Three 3-stars have made a significant impact thus far. Note that 7 of the 3-stars were JUCOs, 4 of which never played, while one more played only one year.

CNC signed 15 Rivals two-star or lower players in 2010. Four of those either never made it to campus or left the program before playing.

Rivals 2-Star players from 2010
1. Kedron Aker, LB: never made it to campus
2. #Bill Autrey, OL: started multiple positions in 2012. Could be multi-year starter.
3. ##TJ Ballou (JUCO), CB: Very solid JUCO signee, 2 -year starter and play maker.
4. ##Conner Boyett, DE: very solid signee, started as a freshman and for 3 years. Hopefully moves back to DE his Sr season. Led team in sacks in 2012 despite playing out of position as an undersized DT.
5. #John Hix, OL: started on OL in 2012. Could be multi-year starter.
6. D'Antwon King, OL: never made it to campus
7. Chris Lofton (JUCO), DB:never made it to campus
8. ##Jamarcus Nelson, WR: speed....big plays...fragile..impact player who has a lot of room to improve over his final 2 seasons. All Conference potential.
9. #Brian O'Leary, OL: Solid player who started multiple positions in 2012.
10. Jamie Onufrak, TE/DE: Made the playing rotation in 2012, but minimal impact.
11. # Deric Scott, DT: Solid player, but undersized for a tackle.
12. ##Pat Shed (JUCO), RB: Fantastic Jr year (if you ignore the big fumbles), injured most of Sr year. Good JUCO signee.
13. DJ Vinson, WR: Played some as a RS freshman, and showed ability to make plays. Sat out due to injury in 2012. Need him to step up in 2013, with a lean receiving corps.
14. Darnell Williams, WR: Never played
15. #Jay Davis, WR: Late signee, who turned out to be a jewel in the rough. Has shown potential to be an impact player, but also prone to disappear for multiple games.

In summary for the 2010 class:
1. Signed 13 Rivals three-star recruits, 7 who played, 5 who were regular starters, and 3 who made a signficant impact.
2. Signed 15 Rivals 2-star or 0-star recruits, 11 who stayed with the program, 9 who have started regularly in at least one season, and 4 who made significant impact.
3. Thus far, the best players for the 2010 class have been: Jamie Bender, Darrion Smith, Jackie Williams, TJ Ballou, Conner Boyett, Jamarcus Nelson, Pat Shed, Deric Scott, and Jay Davis.
4. Of 12 JUCOs (7 who were rated 3-stars), four made a significant impact.
5. Of the 6 high school 3-star recruits who made it to campus, 3 have left (Crusoe, Warren and Franklin), 3 started regularly (Franklin, Walton, J. Williams) and one has had all star quality impact thus far (J. Williams).

Keep in mind that we mainly sign players who need development, so many of the remaining players may step forward and make a much greater impact over the next 2 years.
