Scout Article on Big East Academic standards
The good people over at Bearcat Insider posted this. Nice read. Thanks guys!

Hmmm. School presidents voted 13-3 in favor. Wonder who the three were. No way to back this up, but I'll guess UCONN, South Florida & Louisville were not on board for this. We know Z was.

PS It would suck if they got rid of "grey shirting". Seems we have had some success using it in the last few years.

West Virginia definitely wasn't on board with it, and was vocal against it. So I'm guessing South Florida, Louisville and West Virginia.

So now Juco's are a good thing?

Current Mountaineer Brandon Myles is one of many such success stories. The Virginia native recently earned his fourth year of athletic eligibility by making all the required progress toward his degree. Under the new policy, however, players such as Myles would not be able to enroll at a Big East school until they either earned a qualifying test score/GPA by attending a prep school, or by graduating from a junior college.

I am not sure this is a good thing for a conference trying to establish its footbal reputation.

How about at least waiting a few years before implementing such a change or a phased approach...just seems like cold turkey could really hurt the competitiveness of teams.

Concerning the impact to sports was never discussed..Did read MT's comments correctly?

I'll tell you why I am OK with this. We obviously already committed to a program like this with UC/21. Now we just leveled the playing field for every Big East team we are competing against. This way you don't have one or two "rogue" programs in conference selling their soul to the devil to get recruits to build a program while the other teams have their hands tied with regards to certain kids.

The article said something to the effect that several other conferences already have this academic policy in place. I'd like to find out which ones. I'd guess the ACC for sure, but have no idea which other ones might. Maybe the PAC-10? Don't know how to look into it. Any ideas?

No more bitchin' about UC/21 fellas. We were all stoked to be moving up to the east side with the Jeffersons by joining the Big East - this is the price we have to pay. Ought to call it BE/21 now.

Agreed Rath,
If we have the burden of UC/21, I want UofL and the rest of our conference foes to play on the same field.

Just hope it does hinder the BEast's efforts to build theor football programs.

I would give my eye teeth to know the other conferences.... I think we can rest assured, the Big Ten is not one of them, nor is the SEC

Zar,

I was right. The ACC is one of the conferences with higher standards.

Here is the SEC info. Looks like p 11,12, & 17 might have the applicable information. I don't have time to read it right now. I'll look at it later.
