Tigers and turnovers
First of all great victory. Second, I am concerned about our turnover margin. Interestingly, the 2 top teams in turnover margin are VCU and Louisville. We are ranked 97 in turnover margin. The Tigers are ranked # 8 in steals. VCU, USM and Louisville are 1,2,3 in steals. The key to the Tigers is to reduce the turnovers. We should not have 18 turnovers against Rice. I am not trying to stir the pot but want to hear opinions regarding our metrics on these stat comparisons. Also, this is not a Pastner bash, just want to hear some input on why we have this big disparity over the course of the season. Well, playing VCU and Louisville might have some effect.

RE: Tigers and turnovers
Turnovers are obviously a problem, especially when so many are unforced. They need to get down to no more than 12 a game. Do that and they become even more dangerous. Right now they are averaging just over 15 a game.

I agree about the 12. Hope we get there. Consistency and focus regardless of the opponent is key.

Has been a problem all season. The players do not value every possession. But still a nice win tonight.

Box score lists 15 turnovers, 4 by Shaq, 2 by Adonis, Joe and Damien.

Nor should we have 15. Sorry for the mistake. I am not trolling. I just found the above stats interesting regarding our steals vs turnover margins compared to our opponents. The fact we rank (ncaa.com) 97 in turnover margin is a problem in my opinion especially considering we are # 8 in steals. I will say that steals as a stat are not nearly as important as FG% defense. I have not checked our rankings on that stat as of right now.

Tigers and turnovers
There have been a lot of weird ones. For example:

tonight we got called for at least 4 offensive fouls, only one of which seemed halfway legit.

(meanwhile Tamir Jackson has the biggest carry I have seen in a long time. I mean everyone carries these days but wow I was shocked by what they let him do with the bounce).

Then last game Geron got called for walking 3 times or more I think

Vs Lville we were pushed out of bounds and otherwise fouled but turnover was the call, this accounted for 9 of our turns - I counted them up specifically.

There are sometimes lazy, forced, ir telegraphed passes, which can be corrected.

You can't do anything about weird calls, that's just an x factor.

But the biggest correctable problem is trying to make spectacular plays and misfiring on low percentage passes.

Both the lazy passes and the showtime stuff are usually more of a problem vs overmatched opponants, so it may not be as big of an issue as it seems statistically when it comes to a game that is more inspiring.

But in the end, they do need to keep working on making the right play the right way. It's stuff they already know, so that's the good news. Just need to execute every possession like we are down 2, as practice for when we are.

RE: Tigers and turnovers
Style of play can lead to more turnovers...in other words you cannot get the alley oop dunks by DJ without the risk of a turnover, things like that. Kind of like playing aggressive defense, something we like, also can translate into more fouls.

With that...

Cutting down on turnovers is always good, unless it means you play too carefully and slowly.
