I knew something was wrong with Steve, besides being an UAB Blazer fan. He is a communist.

Now I am laughing so loud, the neighbors can probably hear me.

But really, to me, it can never be played enough. I remember at my day camp back in the 1960's, they played it every morning over the loud speakers at each cabin about 7:00 a.m. so we would get out of bed. You have to stand when the national anthem is played. Our camp owner and director was an ex-Marine.

That wasn't the National Anthem it was Reveille.

Why?

Because they are beautiful songs and because we like to honor those that serve/served from time to time.

Many songs are beautiful. Doesn't mean they're appropriate for church. Church/worship is about honoring the Lord, not other people.

Seems that the National Anthem and other symbols of our once proud country were hijacked by the incident in the 1968 Olympics.

Just not the same universal respect anymore.

I walked into Gurkin's in Collierville yesterday and a country version of the national anthem was being played.

We could all go there to listen to the anthem.

So much for never forgetting 9/11. Patriotism hit a renewal when that tragic event occured. Now people question why play the national anthem at sporting events. I guess no one cares about the lives lost on 9/11 and the people who serve our country so we can freely sit at home and post meaningless crap on a message board.

I can remember the tragic events of 9/11 without hearing the song every sporting event. I can be patriotic without hearing the National Anthem. You guys are acting as if that is the only way. The song itself is just a song, not a sacred sacrament. It is what the song represents that is important. I don't honor the song, but the country it represents.

As I said above, I believe the song would gain in importance if it was played at special events rather than every event. When the national anthem is played and people yell crap at the end of it, how is that honoring anything.

You're only thinking about how the playing of the national anthem affects you personally and not others.

Like someone pointed out, playing the national anthem at sporting events started during World War I as a sign of patriotism at baseball games. And the tradition has cotinued ever since. During World War II, baseball games again became venues for large-scale displays of patriotism, which was needed again while the war was going on.

Sure, you may think singing the national anthem at every sporting event may be cheapened by its overuse. However, every once in awhile someone may beautifully sing the national anthem with such emotion that you can't help but swell up with pride that you're an American and maybe even shed a tear. Whitney Houston's rendition at the Super Bowl was something needed at that particular time for national unity as the Persian Gulf War was happening.

Once again, sporting events are venues for large-scale displays of patriotism. Continuously playing of the national anthem at various sporting events is a constant reminder in different ways to different people 1) of how fortunate that you are living in a free country (especially those who have just legally became citizens of the United States), 2) honoring publicly those who serve our country (especially those in the military who are attending the sporting event), 3) remembering those who lost their lives serving our country, on 9/11 or other tragic event that affected the U.S. as a nation, 4) reminder to those still grieving or was affected that the nation still remembers those who lost their lives serving the country, or 9/11, or other tragic event, 5) gives the athletes, as well as the fans in attendance, a sense of pride in representing their country when the national anthem is played at an international event such as the Olympics, World Cup, etc.

Think about how the playing of the national anthem can affect others, not just you.

Because church is for songs to, for, and about God.
My point exactly. Sports is about sports.

I agree with you Blazer. The overuse of terms like patriot, hero, the greatest country on earth. and God bless America has become jaded.

Other than that....Go Tigers Go!
