I remember Criswell could never finish. I saw him miss tons of layups and pointblank shots...

This is true, but he was young, and he played tenacious defense and could rebound. He could have been a great player for UAB.

If he is a member of a team that has a team rule that he must attend class, it doesn't matter what kind of grades he gets.

Are you suggesting that players should not be required to attend class, if they can make good grades?

That would make us the North Carolina of CUSA, not the Harvard of CUSA.

I guess as good stewards and representatives of the university, they should attend class, but there shouldn't be some crazy, draconian rule if they miss one class they are publicly ostracized and forced to miss games..

Maybe there should be a 75-80% attendance rule? Or possibly even looser? Plenty of people are able to do just fine and better not attending every class all of the time..

One of the things I learned at UAB is that the more I went to class, the better my grades were.

If that sort of thing matters to you.

If there is a team rule that they must attend class, that's one thing. I have known many college students who could, at least in certain classes, do quite well without attending the lectures. If the rule is that the player must maintain his grades, and he's doing it without some kind of cheating, I don't have a problem with missing some class.

In general, however, I agree with Smaug. I noticed as a freshman that I did much better in classes I actually attended. 04-jawdrop Or perhaps more accurately, I noticed that the classes that I skipped tended toward poor academic outcomes.

There are certain requirements of students on an athletic scholarship, and in a general sense they will be much better off going to classes.

Certain classes you definitely have to go to, but there are some where the teacher will post transcripts of their lectures verbatim and give them to the class. Tests are given straight from those notes. In those type of classes, what in the hell is the point of going?

And if they can make good grades and stay out of trouble while maintaining a required level of attendance, I wouldn't freak out about them missing some classes.

I skipped a bunch of classes early in my college career, but ended up graduating *** laude.

... of course I was not a traditional student, nor a scholarship athlete.

I used to say I graduated "Laude how ***" back in 1963 (BA from UA) and again in 1972 (MA from UAB).

Attending class or not usually depends upon how the professor structures the class, his assignments and his exams. Some used to go by the textbook, some largely disregarded it and the main thing were lectures and some used mostly outside readings , a little text and some lectures. Missing class creates greater hazard with some than others. One "prof" was said to include attendance for credit in figuring his grades. You had better know which is which before missing class.

I think this team misses Dexter Fields, especially considering our recent shooting woes. Dexter is at Murry State now and apparently did not have grade issues, but Wimp Jr issues. Dexter always got insanely hot against UCF. Maybe because he was from Orlando.

I bet you've seen even more of people who didn't go to class and flunked out.

Wait.

Of course you didn't. They weren't in class.
