That whole issue caught me up a fair bit. I think this report is wrong, and the best explanation I've seen is that Lanza had the AR-15 with him and used that. He also had two handguns with him in the school. One shotgun was found in the trunk of his car. I've seen video (overhead news copter) with narrative of police recovering it and removing shells from the barrel... it seems clear it is not a long rifle with a clip, which would exclude the AR-15. The police were pretty clear from the beginning that the AR-15 was used.
