2012 average football attendance.

24,896 - Marshall
24,371 - Memphis

Huntington population = 49,253
Memphis population = 652,050

Brag all you want about Memphis' attendance, with that population you should have a sell out every game. SMH

If we start winning...they will show up.

Know how that goes. Winning cures all.

What's the cost for MTSU and FAU to leave the Sun Belt a year early?

"State Flagship" label.. blinids a lot of people ot... I don't get the love for UMass either, (You'd think Boston College would be the best of the Massachusetts schools).

Umass isn't even the real flagship institution for Mass, its the public flagship in a state full of privates. The real flagships of Mass are Harvard and MIT

What about the UMass Debate team? 03-lmfao

RE: Sounds like MTSU & FAU will join this year along with the rest.
Flagship university is really an out-dated term by and large.

It harkens back to when the (usually) land-grant schools were joined by newer universities to serve the public and not just at the usually rural location of the state's oldest university. Many use flagship and land grant interchangeably, although it is less common in the south because compliance with the pesky US Constitution while enforcing Jim Crow cause the creation of parallel land-grant institutions that make up the core of the noted HBCU's.

In most states it was common that the so-called "flagship" received special treatment in the law and higher funding but today most states, even including Arkansas now have a general higher education funding law that is institution neutral awarding operating funds based on undergrad and grad enrollment they may inject other factors such as bonuses or penalties based on student retention, graduation or penalties based upon the number of students admitted scoring less than proficient on some or all of the admissions testing.

When I was in college back in the dark ages, Arkansas received 18% more funds per student enrolled than Arkansas State, today an undergrad at Arkansas is worth the same amount as an undergrad at Arkansas State or Central Arkansas.

The flagship terminology has no real meaning in the majority of states other than as a way for an alum of one institution to attempt to annoy the alum of another.

It's being negotiated. There is no exit fee for schools giving one year's notice, and a $1 million exit fee for notice given less than a year from departure. So, at most we'll pay $1 million but I'd expect much less. Given how much MT/FAU's potential departure will send ADs across the Sun Belt scrambling to find a 12th game, I bet the Belt bumps that exit fee even more. Then again, everyone wants to leave, so maybe not.

Does anyone expect CUSA to have a permanent cross-division rivalry game when all the new members start to join next season? I would assume that some of the current members may want a permanent game against an old rival of the opposite division, but I don't know. Given that each team will have 6 division games next season, that only leaves 2 games against the other.

Since the new 12 team CUSA started its been 3 schools playing each other for 2 years Home and Away. For example 2 yars ago Marshall played Tulsa and Houston on the road and Rice at home, this year we had Tulsa and Houston at home and Rice on the road. This year its suppose to be Tulane and SMU on the road and UTEP at home. If Tulane and SMU are both gone I assume UNT will take SMU place and maybe LA Tech, Tulane's place, if both ECU and Tulane are gone. And MTSU and FAU are in.

UMASS is the perfect example for the NCAA to step in and make it more difficult to move up for IAA programs. I think each school should have an adequit stadium to play in. In this case UMass doesn't. Their on campus stadium only hold 17K and has not been renovated in years, except Field Turf and a scoreboard, no exterior renovates. They also have not avged over 12K since their National Chamipinship year in 1998. And no Gillette Stadium is not an alternitive. Its 96 miles from campus.

You can't play FB in one FBS conference and all other sports in another FBS. FBS being the key part. The Big West does not sponser FBS football.

Didn't you guys just go 0-12? Yeah...that's what I thought.

Yeah USM went 0-12 in 2012 ending an eighteen year winning season streak, 10 straight bowl games, first losing season as C-USA member and the list goes on. You are a disgrace to the school you claim to support because you just make others think you represent the mainstream Tiger fans and I know you don't. Such an statement as that shows you lack the ability to think into anything beyond the surface level.

you seem like a nice guy so I'm going to be very nice about all all of this...me and eagle rock are messing with wash other...just talking a little light hearted smack (and I wasn't even talking to you)...I found his response rather humorous...this is a message board, not Emily Post's etiquette class.

I don't know if having a permanent cross-division rival will work unless we eventually go to 9 conference games.

If not, UAB will either not play USM or MTSU every year which would be krud. It's not great to be located in the middle if it means you are separated from some of the schools closest to you.

Yeah, it seems absolutely ridiculous to say that UAB and MT wouldn't play in football every single year.

There is no NCAA rule preventing it. Conference bylaws may will prevent it but no NCAA rule.

let us just state for the record that we are totally okay with not playing you every year. that's one way to stop the damn streak.

This. MT will most likely be in CUSA for 2013, much to our happiness. I'm excited. I know our fan base will be pumped.

Hell yes! Lets do it!

I hear ya, and think you'll get your wish for one last season. If you just look at a map, it looks like this is the most geographic sense for 2013. In 2015, however, I don't think there is anyway MU, USM and UAB can stay together:

East
Marshall
ECU
UAB
MTSU
FIU
FAU
USM

West
La Tech
Tulsa
Rice
UTEP
UTSA
North Texas
Tulane

Love that fact that MTSU and FAU may well be coming in this year!

I think you're right. Southern Mississippi would next to shift to the West. What will CUSA membership look like in 2014, assuming Tulsa leaves?

Depends on who/if anyone is brought into replace them if it were to happen.

If it were Arky State for instance, aSu just takes Tulsa's place
If it's WKU, then I think USM shifts to the west.

Green stamps. We used to get them when we checked out at publix when I was a kid. You would collect them and then use them to get gifts from a catalog.
