Here is where you'd find a major schism among USM fans...

Some of us think the future's better in C-USA.

Others think they we have to go with some the current (Soon to be altC-USA) C-USA schools

Just depends on which camp you're in as to which set of comments you'd see from any given fan at any given time.

...or maybe we are tired of kidney punches and don't care b/c we know we are at the mercy of 'those'....like I have posted many times...we are 81 of 80...we are what we are....so fk all the crap....lets just get the best that the 'best' don't want from recruiting (or the 'rest')...and just beat their arse....in the end, i hope we just beat snot out of 'em all...the funny thing is nobody can explain our success.....all 3 sports are interesting and fodder (football only last year) ....and just fun to watch...baseball around the corner and this could be special year in hoops....that is why we ARE SOUTHERN MISS...no give up...anywhere, anytime, anyplace!
with
...we may be small with the smallest budget....but I know I have fun watching these programs grow against all and every odds...I bet the majority would agree that type of history is special....it is what we are

well, yeah. I mean, sooner or later you get the message. the nBE would rather shred it's scrotum with a cheese grater than invite us. cool. got it. we'll go do something else. I wouldn't step on the field with us anytime soon, but we got it 03-wink

Cinci, Temple, UConn, and USF are the only voting members at this time. You need 3 of the 4 to get to the 75% threshold to get an invite. So, basically one school can stop it at this time. In July, the 4 current CUSA schools will get voting rights. That will change the voting dynamics completely. Six of 8 will be needed for a invite. I suspect the votes to get an invite for S Miss will be there once the newbies arrive.

The money people that could afford to pay for it are mostly against it. We won't accept it, unless there is more to the BE contract than is commonly believed.

If Hammond wants/needs the money for it, he'll get the money for it. No matter how the old guard feels about it. Everyone should understand this by now.

Not that we'd have any power over it, but it'd be worthwhile to consider closely if an invite was ever issued.

I'm suddenly encouraged by C-USA after all is said & done. Actually seems stable after the NBE's instability.

Truth is, we'll have as much chance as the NBE or anyone else chasing BSU in the MWC conference.

I also have no doubt USM will perform near the top of any conference we'll end up.

C-USA has a nice crop of schools coming in. Lot of upside. We just need to keep the numbers as is, & try to keep Tulsa & UTEP in the fold.

I'm a big believer in the General. Don't misunderstand what I'm saying. But a lot of the talk about "huge" donations coming after the Duff donation has not materialized. I don't really know if the money is out there. That said, our financial problems are not nearly as bad as the other schools want to believe. We have hit a bump in the road, and we will regroup, and do what we do, which is win, wherever we are.

RE: Southern Mississippi has no support from existing Big East Presidents]
(01-12-2013 05:31 PM)USM Wrote:  http://csnbbs.com/showthread.php?tid=612...pid8820439

Quote:My MWC folks have gotten quite . . . UH isn't much better, but here is what I was told this morning by the only one at UH still providing specifics:

* SDSU told the Big East that SDSU is going back to the MWC, pending a vote by the MWC presidents. They came to Dallas only because technically the MWC has not voted yet to invite them. SDSU is "respected by everyone in the room;"

* BYU told the MWC no. BYU remained "inflexible" in its demands to control all of its media rights. It offered to not take any national TV bonuses on other games. "Thompson promised what he couldn't deliver." BYU never wanted anything more than an "affiliation" to gain access to the BCS Bowl, which they proposed to split with the conference, nothing more. The MWC presidents were split over BYU. I do not know who supported what.

* The MWC offered BYU and UH (and they think everyone in the conference) that the MWC would waive exit fees if they left to join a Power 5 Conference;

* UH and SMU is staying in the Big East;

* Every one in the Big East has "resigned themselves" that new additions will come from Conference USA for now. Aresco has said the TV numbers don't work for MAC schools. UMass lacks internal administration, big donor, and alumni support to commit long-term at the level it is being asked to commit. Average attendance levels at Gillette was the deciding factor because UMass could offer no explanation of how it plans to increase attendance "dramatically;"

* Aresco is telling conference presidents that adding new FBS schools with "growth potential" like ODU, James Madison, UTSA, etc. despite expected attendance over 30,000 at some is not well-received at this time by TV partners;

* Tulsa is a certainty even if SDSU flips. Tulsa is favored because of its academic reputation and success on the field, but mostly because it completes a "western division" of Tulsa, UH, SMU, Tulane, Memphis, and Cincinnati. Tulsa comes in 2014. Tulsa also completes the core of schools that the remaining conference leaders USF, UCF, UH, SMU, and ECU want to move forward on their own if UConn, Cinncinnati, Navy, leave. . . Southern Mississippi has no support by existing Big East presidents or Areasco at this time . . .

* Navy is still committed, but can not come before 2015;

* The conference will be a 12-team conference;

* A key discussion point is whether to bolster the basketball strength by adding 2-4 schools like St. Louis, VCU, Wichita State, Belmont, etc. There is no consensus on who to invite if this is done;

And for what it's worth . . . the PAC-12's Larry Scott told Dr. Khator this week that for now, UH is first on his list if they expand because of the "enormous potential" at Houston . . . SMU is not a consideration at this time . . . if this happens, "it happens in the next two years, or it never happens" . . .

USM fans, I wouldn't put much stock in this Houston homer article. Its not likely the writer knows more than anyone on this board. The line concerning the PAC 12 wanting Houston is so ridiculous that it puts the entire article in serious doubt. Someone is trying to make themselves feel super important. Its nonsense.

But surely you would agree that it's odd that the same group of presidents participated in the successful Tulane vote and now don't have any support for USM. I'm not being critical of the Tulane addition at all, but merely questioning the logic of having support for one and not the other.

If that part of this article was true then it would have to be market, pure and simple. Personally I think the entire article is baloney.

indeed. it would help if a certain faction of the southern miss fanbase didn't bleat "we's po" every time there was a setback. southern miss has dealt with small budgets since I was a student back in the 80's.

no one hid behind it as an excuse until 0-12, and until we became invisible to conference realignment. it's lame, it's unseemly, and it's embarrassing. it needs to stop.

Well, here's the catch......it's not an article.

It's supposed Houston "insider" information from someone a poster knows. So, you know how that goes.

indeed. it would help if a certain faction of the southern miss fanbase didn't bleat "we's po" every time there was a setback. southern miss has dealt with small budgets since I was a student back in the 80's.

no one hid behind it as an excuse until 0-12, and until we became invisible to conference realignment. it's lame, it's unseemly, and it's embarrassing. it needs to stop.

...our tiny budget relative to others is undeniable....but with you on the 'we is po' part...would pull up the 'we's too po to fire EJ' bs, but that would be pointless too...

....just keep winning...changes everything....hoop crowd tonight was almost old school...was fun regardless

...have to ask why USM would now go to nBE...have asked all along, but is more relevant and debatable now

exactly. we're paying a guy $2M to coach for someone else.

I'm a big believer in the General. Don't misunderstand what I'm saying. But a lot of the talk about "huge" donations coming after the Duff donation has not materialized. our relatively small athletic budget was a badge of honor until we got torpedoed by EJ. then the excuse-mongering started. it's just unlike us. and it's embarrassing.

we know the deck is stacked against us a hundred different ways. it always has been. until recently, we didn't care. we put our head down and played, and for the most part, we won.

but now some of us want to wallow in this crap, and I hate it.

we need to man up as a fan base. like, today.

Seems like today was a turning point. Between the slight in the BE meetings, & the BB team rolling against UH, I sense the USM folks getting back to normal of manning up & trudging forward without complaint, as we've always done

You're either a poet or live at the Sigma Chi house.

Oh how the times have apparently changed. It used to be that the Kappa Sigs couldn't go more than a decade without being accused of some major rape/sexual assault scandal.

Sigma Chis were the most decent, upstanding guys on frat row (followed closely by the ATOs) when I was USM. Has that changed?

So, basically one school can stop it at this time. In July, the 4 current CUSA schools will get voting rights. That will change the voting dynamics completely. Six of 8 will be needed for a invite. I suspect the votes to get an invite for S Miss will be there once the newbies arrive.

But surely you would agree that it's odd that the same group of presidents participated in the successful Tulane vote and now don't have any support for USM. I'm not being critical of the Tulane addition at all, but merely questioning the logic of having support for one and not the other.

Wasn't there an article stating that UConn and Cincinatti abstained on the Tulane vote, because those two schools were waiting on invitations form the ACC?

Have you been paying attention?

UAB is far ahead of USM as far as an invite goes, no way it's even close.

it won't happen for them, either. holybama will order espn to order the nBE to NOT invite them.

I really doubt they care what conference we join. There are two classes of college football program in their view: "SEC" and "Not SEC." Whether it's CUSA or Bestest Ever or ACC or MWC, it's still not the SEC and therefore still not relevant.

I favor them doing so in any and all circumstances.
