Well the potential "splash" name has been leaked it's Randy Shannon. Nowhere near official yet and nothing more than rumor, but either way I expect us to know who our new DC will be in the next day or 2.

Randy Shannon is far from a "Splash Hire". He is a failed HC at what used to be a power school. Of course Miami is no longer a football power and haven't been since the move to the ACC.

He might be a good DC,but my question would be, why would he turn the DC position down at Arkansas where we would have made close to 750-800K to go to ECU for 200-250K.

He's a failed HC but his DC resume at Miami was outstanding. As for why he'd leave Arkansas he isn't their DC he's their LB coach and we are going to be paying more than 200k. Not really sure why the hostle reaction towards my post, I didn't just make up this rumor it's been all over twitter from several sources. As for whether he would be a "splash" hire or not he's a name that is pretty recognizable so for that alone it would be a bit of a splash.

Shannon was hired at the begining of 2012 for LB at Arkansas. Last month when Arkansas DC resigned, Shannon interviewed for the job and all accounts it was his to turn down.

Shannon to Interview for Hogs DC

So my question is still valid. Why would he turn down Arkansas to go to ECU. It would be a good hire for ECU just a strange move.

Marshall is "internet official" with Heater.

It can't get worse (can it?).

He was the LB coach at TCU this season and was hired at Arkansas as of 12/30 according to this link.

Shannon to Arkansas

As far as why he didn't get hired as the DC there I can't answer that.

RE: Marshall DC hire
To Clarify, Randy Shannon has a better head coaching record than Doc Holliday, and Ruffin McNeill for that matter. He was 28-20 as HC at Miami, and directed them to three bowls in four years (fired before right before the third bowl game).

As a DC at Miami his defenses ranked 2nd, 4th, 6th, 7th, 7th, and 28th nationally and he received the Broyles Award in 2001 given annually to the best assistant coach in college football.

That is a 'splash hire' in my opinion.

He also done that when he had "Ray Lewis" type players. When Miami's min requirement for athletes was the same as Marshall's, 21 on the ACT. Starting in 2005 Miami started requiring a 26 on the ACT and the talent level at Miami has dropped drasticly.

We don't need him to be the Steel Curtain. With just a modest defense in 2012, we win 8 games at least.

He plays a very soft bend-dont-break D, which we saw with Mark onofrio (no D) who is now with Golden at Miami. It was very frustrating to watch.

Perfect.

That sounds less frustrating than watching your corners line up 8 yards off the WR on 3rd and 7... all season long.

...dayum, Bradford was your DC this year??? (ours for Fed's first 3)...sucks watching that crap...

'course, didn't matter against us this year... 03-puke

You sound kinda butthurt.

I actually seen a post on the Temple board that ask why Heater would "Downgrade" his position. Really...Going from Temple to Marshall is a downgrade. Umm sure....

I can almost bet Heater will have more to work with a Marshall than he did at Temple. Hell one of those on D at Temple came from Marshall.

Not in the slightest. He did a better job two years ago, but his defense was really exposed. I thought he was really overrated considering all of the acclaim. I'm sure Marshall is paying him less than Temple was. I'm sure he'll have more of the 4 stars who couldn't qualify to play major college football at Marshall, that's for sure.
