My issue is seen right here. I don't begrudge programs from doing well, but I take exception to the way they got there. ZSU and the state government have worked actively against other Ohio schools.

Why that matters is this: the economics of recreation is a zero-sum game. So every dollar ZSU squeezes out means less for other teams. And while that goes for big salaries and luxury boxes in the 'shoe, it means fewer scholarships for Ohio student athletes.

If this is truly about scholastics and opportunity for residents, then this is theft by ZSU. (Albeit complicit by most of the state's residents).

On a MAC board? That would seem a bit odd.

I'd like to see this compared to costs, to see who is and isn't making a profit. Isn't it about 15 BCS teams are in the black and every other D1 CFB team is in the red?

Depends on your definition of 'profit'.

IF a school wants to charge back to the athletic department the values of athletic scholarships then a lot of schools will go into the red.

take 25K x 400 athletic scholarships = 10M bucks.

And 25K isn't going to do it at Duke, Northwestern, etc.

I could see their charge backs at say 15 - 20M year 2 semesters.

RobertN, i think you're right about that.

HuskieJohn, i imagine his presence on our board has a little something to do with Ohio's visit to the U of L on 8/31.

Most would consider an athletic scholarship as a cost. Profit is what is left over after you pay all the program's bills.
The school may not charge the athletic dept. directly for that scholarship, but the school is paying for it indirectly when they fund their schools and programs and pay their professors' salaries and benefits.

I think it's just de facto theft over the course of time. OSU and UM are the state flagships, so naturally they are the largest schools, draw the most money, and have the largest alumni base over all others. OSU draws so much money because the powers that be in Ohio either went there or know that it'll boost their political position by supporting OSU, unfortunately. No one will ever get elected on a platform of renovating Yager, Peden, Doyt, etc. on that alone - people are so fickle with their votes these days that if someone promised to improve the Buckeye's, then that would have some effectiveness.

It also is the way the state universities are set up in nature. For example, the SUNY system has multiple flagships and they draw fairly comparable support I imagine, so there's no dominant school. OSU was put at the top and schools like Toledo and Akron were founded to serve their communities as second-class citizens.

RE: Total Revenues by Team
Here's my problem with this list - no link as to the source. Total Revenues are often calculated differently at different schools.

We could be comparing apples to snowshoes.

RE: Total Revenues by Team
Kind of reminds me of Brad Pitt's speech in Moneyball, "There are rich teams, and there are poor teams. Then there's fifty feet of crap. And then there's us."

What sticks out to me is not only the disparity of revenue between different conferences, but within the conferences themselves. Take Texas vs. Iowa State - that's such a huge gap that sticks out, especially how the Big 12 handles their revenue unevenly. The MWC and nBE also stick out, as UNLV and UConn dwarf the other schools by far, and to a lesser extent, WKU and the Belt. Among all conferences though, the MAC has the least range, only 13 million separates Ohio and Buffalo.

But on a relative scale, that's around 90%. Not trivial.

Another factor with Ohio State is they never built more than 1 school within its market. They have the Central Florida/South Florida factor going for them more than anything academic.

NE Ohio (Cleveland St, Akron, Kent St)
NW Ohio (Toledo, Bowling Green St)
Central Ohio (Ohio State)
SW Ohio (Wright St, Miami, Cincinnati)
Southern Ohio (Ohio, Shawnee St)

If you take NW Ohio for example, there are two solid schools in Toledo and Bowling Green that compete with each other for students. Combine them and you would have a SUNY level school.

The same would apply for Akron and Kent State (though Kent is almost SUNY level anyways).

UC would be on the level of Pitt academically if it didn't have the competition of Miami-Oh. Miami would be on the level of UVA if it had UC's research.

Central Ohio is non-competitive for Ohio State and that's where 50% of its students come from. Southern Ohio is non-competitive for Ohio University. Shawnee State is a small public school that was originally an Ohio branch campus.

I agree with your history. But you look at Fl or even CA, and it doesnt have to be so disparate.

Its bad for OH and its residents
