Actually, I think ESPN put a bug in the Big 10's ear about the value of Rutgers and Maryland (which would lead to the loss of another BE school)...funny how that happened almost IMMEDIATELY after the ESPN exclusivity period ended.

IMHO, the basketball schools took this leap on their own.

Good for the NBE. You've got to believe in your brand.

It does in the SEC and Big 12 and such but not in the nBE. Once the nBE lost it's status as an AQ conference football ceased being the driving force.

Why 'funny'? It doesn't matter what the Big East asked for since this was the exclusive period. Heck, I'd ask for 300 million too if I wanted to get to open bargaining where I know I can get fair market. Good grief this is HUGE *no news*.

Exactly. I heard back then that is what the BE asked for. It's what the B12 is making. The BE wanted to go on the open market, so they were goung to ask high. And it makes no damn difference what ESPN offered, od what the BE turned down, b/c the membership changed so much after that, and nothing being offered would keep anybody there.

Yep, the goal was to get to the open market, so ask for the sky, all the while knowing it will be turned down.

The B1G Network is partnered with Fox Sports and I don't see why ESPN wants to help the B1G Network.

No one will be watching the Rutgers (and probably Maryland) football games on ABC because its fairly unlikely to be a spotlight game. Kind of how Vandy is never on CBS.

Settle down, I just thought the amount itself was funny, because they knew they'd have no shot of getting it.

Spare me the lectures, I know how exclusive negotiations work, and I know exactly why we did it.

If the Big East was in the neighborhood of getting $300 million, the C7 schools would come running back. I don't know how it would break down for all sports schools vs others, but that's $25 million per school in a 12 team league.

If the nBE turned down 1/2 of $300 million per year the leaders are dumb as hell...

ESPN still shows a lot if Big 10 games, plus it knocked the luster off of the BE (at least whatever was left).
