Brian Kelly interviews with Philadelphia Eagles
The Philadelphia Eagles have interviewed Notre Dame's Brian Kelly for their coaching vacancy, league sources told ESPN.

Kelly met with the Eagles on Tuesday, and there was mutual interest after the interview, according to league sources. Kelly left the country after meeting with the Eagles and could not be reached for comment.

The Eagles and Kelly have agreed to revisit talks when he returns this weekend, according to league sources.

Kelly dispels NFL rumors

Monday night’s BCS Championship game won’t be the last Brian Kelly coaches on the Notre Dame sideline, he said Saturday afternoon during the team’s Media Day.

Brian Kelly told reporters Saturday that leaving Notre Dame for an NFL job was not an option.

Kelly dispelled rumors about his leaving for a National Football League vacancy from what he described as a dunk tank booth parked at the 20-yard line of Sun Life Stadium. Reports surfaced last week that Oregon’s Chip Kelly wasn’t the only college coach on wish lists for the slew of professional teams that have recently cut ties with their coaches.

He did not say definitively whether he or his agent had been contacted by pro teams, but that taking any hypothetical offer was off the table for the time being.

“I think from my perspective I've got the best job in the country,” he said. “NFL, college, high school, whatever. I just look at the place that I'm at and thankful for the opportunity that I have.”

He then tried to steer the crowd of questions into more imminent topics like dethroning defending national champion Alabama Monday night in Miami.

“This is the biggest game that I've ever been involved in, so my focus is 100 percent on this football game,” Kelly said. “All that other stuff, that happens when you're winning football games. I've been through this a lot in my career. It's flattering if there is interest, which I don't know that there is, but again, that is such a secondary topic for me right now, it's all about this game.”

Probably a ploy to try and get Saban type money, which he isn't worth. Even if its something close to Urban Meyer money, he isn't worth that either. BK needs to get some championship rings first.

I would find it totally F'ing hilarious if he bailed though.

BK will be a solid NFL coach some day, and Philly could be a decent fit for him, but the QB situation could be a tough sell to a first time NFL coach. He excels at getting the most out of the talent he has at hand.

I'm getting a little schadenfreude out of this as well. Hey Jack Swarbick, how does it feel to be a stepping stone program?

Meh. He's just pimping for a couple more mil and a longer term deal with the domers who lay palm branches before his feet wherever he goes.

This guy works every angle looking out for el numero uno.

I do think he'd make a great NFL coach, though.

Even if this is just a ploy for more money im surprised. they just "returned" to glory with an nc appearance. notre dame fans are sensitive and defensive when it comes to their football team. After kelly's word choice (dream job) after the hire i bet most nd fans expected a cronin-like allegience all the way up to simply turning down ANY interest/call/contact from ANYwhere.

This probably pissed off some people at nd. they wont do anything about it. they need kelly more than he does them. but still surprising kelly did this at all. surprising. would love to see him go.

RE: Brian Kelly interviews with Philadelphia Eagles
I will be SHOCKED if he actually ends up in Philly this year.

Regarding using it as a chip for more money from ND; isn't taking a team back to national relevance , going undefeated and to the national championship grounds for a hefty raise and extension in itself?

All in all not a smart move even if he has no intentions of leaving . ND fans aren't happy. You dont do this in South Bend. WE get rid of YOU if we want.

And in his forever slimeiness , hours after the losing the national championship , hes on a plane to talk to Philly, then immediately out of the country on vacation. The whole thing just makes him look like as ass..oh wait ..he is.

I get that it's probably just a ploy to get more money from ND, but I think this is a dangerous game to play with recruiting. Why even plant that seed when I'm sure ND would have been more than happy to give him a raise. Now there is concrete evidence to use in negative recruiting.

I don't think Kelly is that dumb. I think he's actually very interested in the NFL.

How unprecedented would Brian Kelly's move be?

If Brian Kelly does leave Notre Dame for the NFL, it would mark one of the most unprecedented coaching moves in college football history. / Brian Spurlock-USA TODAY Sports

USA TODAY

"Leaving is not an option. I don't even think about it," Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly said Saturday, when he was holding court at the BCS media day at Sun Life Stadium. "I think from my perspective I've got the best job in the country, NFL, college, high school, whatever," he added.

Five days later — and two days after his Fighting Irish were dismantled by Alabama in the championship game — USA TODAY Sports confirmed reports that Kelly had met with the Philadelphia Eagles about its vacant head coach position.

If Kelly does leave Notre Dame for the NFL, it would mark one of the most unprecedented coaching moves in college football history. Consider:

Kelly would be the first Notre Dame coach to leave voluntarily for another position in nearly 70 years. The last was Ed McKeever, who traded in the Fighting Irish for Cornell after the 1944 season. From a report in the St. Petersburg Times on Feb. 28, 1945:

McKeever apparently elected to leave an insecure berth at Notre Dame in favor of a regular vacancy at Cornell. Last August, Notre Dame officials announced that (Frank) Leahy, who is now in the South Pacific but then was in the United States, had signed a long-term contract to begin with his release from the service.

Every other Notre Dame coach from McKeever through Charlie Weis has left either through retirement (like a Dan Devine or Ara Parseghian) or was fired for below-average results (Weis, Tyrone Willingham, Bob Davie, Gerry Faust and others).

Kelly would be only the seventh coach to accept another position after competing in a BCS bowl. The others: Butch Davis (Miami) in 2000, Steve Spurrier (Florida) in 2001, Bobby Petrino (Louisville) in 2006, June Jones (Hawaii) in 2007 and Randy Edsall (Connecticut) and Jim Harbaugh (Stanford) in 2010.

While many coaches have taken another position before a BCS game — even Kelly did so prior to the 2010 Sugar Bowl, when he left Cincinnati for Notre Dame, and Northern Illinois' Dave Doeren did so in 2012 — he would join a short list of coaches who went through the game itself before accepting another offer. (Several coaches have taken another job but still coached through the BCS game.)

Kelly would be the first coach to leave a school immediately after coaching in the BCS National Championship Game. While other coaches who reached the BCS title game have eventually moved on (Larry Coker, Jim Tressel, Frank Solich, even Nick Saban), none have done so immediately after the game itself.

Brian Kelly staying at Notre Dame
Updated: January 12, 2013, 6:00 PM ET
ESPN.com news services

Brian Kelly is staying with Notre Dame.

Kelly met with the Philadelphia Eagles on Tuesday, and there was mutual interest after the interview, according to league sources.

CBSSports.com reported Wednesday the Chicago Bears also were interested in Kelly. But sources refuted that report to ESPNChicago.com.

"This week, I had an incredible opportunity to speak with one of the premier organizations in sports about becoming their head coach," Kelly said in a statement released through the school.

"Like every kid who has ever put on a pair of football cleats, I have had thoughts about being a part of the NFL. However, after much reflection and conversation with those closest to me, I have decided to remain at Notre Dame.

"This decision was motivated purely by my love for Notre Dame and the entire Fighting Irish community, the young men I have the great fortune to coach, and my desire to continue to build the best football program in the country.

"We still have a lot of work to do and my staff and I are excited about the challenges ahead."

Kelly coached the Fighting Irish to a 12-0 regular season and an appearance in the Discover BCS National Championship. Playing for its first national title since 1988, Notre Dame was routed by Alabama, 42-14, on Monday night.

Information from ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter, ESPN senior NFL analyst Chris Mortensen and The Associated Press was used in this report.
