Probably not. GA, is anything, is fascinated by tradition...which Army has plenty of to go along with widespread appeal.

What they lack is anything resembling recent success.

From Katz's blog this morning >>>>

...The remaining Big East athletic directors will meet in Dallas on Jan. 11 to discuss their latest moves, including the update on the television negotiations. Tulsa and UMass have been discussed as possible additions if the Big East decides to expand, according to multiple sources. Rice and Southern Miss were also tossed around. Meanwhile, the Mountain West expects to move on San Diego State by the end of this week, according to a league source. The MWC has to decide if it will go to 12 or 14. The MWC has interest in SMU and Houston, but SMU has let it be known to the MWC it has no interest as the Mustangs and Cougars are set to go to the Big East. UTEP desperately wants to be in the MWC, according to a source, and is on the MWC list. BYU is the first choice for the MWC but at this juncture the Cougars want to remain independent in football, WCC in other sports.

While I was a believer in the concept of a national, 4 timezone conference, having a more compact conference extending no further west than Dallas Texas has some advantages. Tulsa and UMass make sense geographically and TV market-wise - plus one brings good football and the other good basketball.

Right --- and I think San Diego isn't long for this conference.

Just curious, why isn't Marshall included in possible additions to the nBE? From a history and tradition standpoint, they seem to have a lot more to offer than Southern Miss. For some reason, adding S Miss just turns me off but Marshall "feels" better...I mean heck, they made a movie after them!...lol

I am also fascinated by class, academic excellence and national name-recognition. This year Army beat Boston College and Air Force, lost to Northern illinois by 1 and lost to Navy when they fumbled on what would likely have been a game-winning TD drive. I think that under the right coach, they can compete well enough.

In both cases, the markets are too small. They can't pull their own weight in revenue.

I hope that UTEP lands in the MWC. They deserve to be in that conference and I think they would be a great member.

I would argue that Tulsa meets that criteria as well. Aside from their recent rogue AD's missteps, they've been a very good partner, their academics are where they need to be, and they aren't as recognized as Army, but have been more successful.

Army will always have problems competing nationally and sustaining it. They seem to have learned that they need to run "different" schemes because they are so limited in the people they can bring in (weight limits for new cadets)...but can they sustain their recent gains?

Plus adding Tulsa means the MWC doesn't get them and might keep Houston in the BE.

UNLV would be good for BB, but based on this past season would bring FB down even further. Also, would have to add Navy for FB at least for now.

UNLV would be good for all sports only. If they were added (and I don't think they want to leave the MWC), their strength is basketball. I just don't see SDSU or UNLV in the Big East. I think both will be MWC teams.

I like adding Tulsa for sure. I can't get that excited about UMASS, as they are just getting to FBS football and their basketball team really isn't that great either. They had some great years under Calipari, but haven't been to the NCAA since 1998. Obviously, Aresco sees some value with UMASS.

I still think we look to add the best basketball schools possible to the Big East. If the C7 can get a good deal for hoops (I doubt they see the alleged $5 million/year), a league with UCONN, Cinci, Memphis, Temple could do OK. But what if you added some teams such as VCU, Butler, St Louis, Dayton, Xavier, etc? Is it possible to negotiate a similar deal for this league? Even if UCONN and Cinci leave, there would still be a very good basketball conference left. We say it's all about football, but what if a basketball league could actually net a large contract? Football certainly pays for the Big 5 conference, but I doubt our TV deal for football is going to net over $5 million per school.
