Had good convos with a few FSU fans. There were two guys a few rows behind me in Florida colors cheering for NIU. Somebody around them puked and they left.
Sat next to a woman for the whole first-half. I couldn't understand her ranting on FSU half the time, but she wasn't mean.
I moved to the 43-something section for the second half. One fan booed after I cheered Martell's TD. I told him to calm down, it was their probably their only score the rest of the night. Sadly, I was right.
Other than that, I had no issues. That tomahawk chant is offensive to me, and I'm not a Native American.
+1 Illinois does it too. Very annoying and offensive.
The Seminole tribe of Florida seems to be ok with it... Smh
FSU and the Seminole Tribe of Florida have a great relationship.
Seminole Tribe women design the costume for Chief Osceola and
The president of the Florida Seminole Tribe planted the spear before the homecoming game this year and was a grand marshall.
Osceola and Renegade were Grand Marshalls at the 74th annual Brighton Field Days Festival and Rodeo parade this year as well.
Nice to have that good relationship.
University of Illinois had to give up their Indian Chief Illiniwek as it was determined that he was "offensive"... but Illini fans still do the same tomahawk chop thing that you guys do. http://will.illinois.edu/chief-illiniwek...he-issues/
I think it could perhaps be pretty common for Indian based teams use that tomahawk chop. Which in turn some people could maybe see as a form of stereotyping and could perhaps find it offensive.
UI was forced to give up The Chief when a very limited number of students, in fact a handful decided to make a name for themselves and their future careers in law school of head of some special interest group. Against the roughly 90%+ of the srudent body in favor. Basically, looked good on your resume. Then some bureacrats and politicians did the same, as well as the NCAA when pressure of a few about that of a raindrop overcame them.
True, there may be no proof of a Chief Illiniwek, or a dance. And I may be wrong, the tribe is extinct with decendents spread out into other tribes.
In any case, the University of Illinois's tradition of The Chief went back decades, along with their prurchasing headdresses from tribes, of which one back in the 1980's that I was present for, when they paid 15k to a tribe from ND I believe. I am sure that tribe liked the money and didn't think their headdress was an exploitation at the time. Perhaps over time they may have been paid to change their view or received money from other sources to then cry offensive. It wasn't then, isn't now, just as Chief Osceola is not. The Chicago Blackhawk logo isn't either, along with other symbols. If someone wants to say perhaps the old Braves and Indians logo is offensive, I won't disagree.
As for the chop, I don't care either way. It is annoying non stop as is the USC Trojan March on Troy. But to say ban it, I don't agree. While not someone to run around and claim "freedom of speech" at every turn, their are much more offensive lies and deragatory slander told each and every day played out on cable, on the radio and on the internet. Not to mention the "indian casinos" all over this country ans all these "lands" now claimed to be "indian lands.", such as the one in Glenwood of 394 theat Jessie Jackson , JR was very close to getting a casino on.. Newslash, the ENTIRE COUNTRY was Indian lands! But somehow there is more and more of them and some how they are ok since it's "for the tribe", "employs people." Real reason tax revenue, kickbacks.
