He won't be in that slot long. There will be a local afternoon drive show from 3-6 at some point in the near future IMO...

RE: New Sports Talk Station
No more Real Talk 1160

01/02/13 at 12:13pm by jkiesewetter

We gained a new radio format and lost one this year already.

“Real Talk 1160″ WQRT-AM fired its local staff today after Dean Miuccio finished his “Cincinnality” morning show. Also gone are newsman T.C. Summers, and afternoon sports hosts Dennis “Wildman” Walker (3-5 p.m.) and Jeff Piecoro (5-7 p.m.). They will be replaced by syndicated shows through Monday. The station will go dark — go off the air — after the Notre Dame football game Monday night. A new format will debut Feb. 1.

In recent years, “Real Talk 1160″ has tried to compete with the Clear Channel talk empire with Andy Furman, Eric Deters, Wildman Walker, Piecoro and Miuccio. They gave up today, when the old MOJO/WCFN-FM (100.3) launched the Cincinnati Fan FM sports talk format and the CBS Sports Radio Network programming. 1160 operations manager Rob Williams and sports talk host/producer Rick Ucchino quit and jumped to WCFN-FM (100.3) for today’s start-up.

Jon Yinger, owner of the Michigan-based Christian Broadcast System Ltd., said in an email to me:

“We’ve decided to change directions with WQRT. Clearly, this was not the success that we though it would be. Having given it a really good run, we’ve decided to pull the plug. The live programs are gone as of today. We are fulfilling our obligations through 1/7/12 (Notre Dame). I’ll let you know as soon as we have everything lined up for the format change 2/1/12…. Thanks.”

Yinger says he might announce a new format as early as Friday. It’s not clear what will happen to NKU basketball games broadcasts

Tried to listen this morning up here in northern Warren county.....not so good. Too much fading out so I had to turn back to satellite radio.

Listened a bit from about 8 to 8:30. Pretty much all Bengals talk during that time period but not sure what was talked about the rest of the show.

I heard just a bit around 8:30 or so. Gamble was saying how he hoped he was wrong in his impression of Tuberville as a coach who is here for a well paid working retirement.

Not a surprise, no one listens to 1160. There are only about 3 square miles in the city where that station even comes in.

Gamble talked a little about the Belk Bowl early in the show. Mentioned what a great game it was and how it was great to see them win when it looked like they had lost the game.

I am not a radio expert, but if somebody wants to make a name and carve out a niche then doubling down on the college scene is probably a good move. Reds and Bengals are covered to death by 700, and of course because they cover the games also. I don't see anybody taking
Reds Bengals market share from 700.

Mike DeCourcey told me that in Pittsburgh the Panthers get 10 times more radio coverage then the Beracats do here.
One station does pretty much 3 hours on all things Pitt, host might be the former QB Bostick????
So locally, if you want to carve out a market share it can be done, but you better make yourself an expert and
this all things negative will not sell long term period.

RE: New Sports Talk Station
It would be a welcome alternative--UC coverage @ WLW these days is strictly limited to game broadcasts and weekly shows from the coaches. With so many stations licensed in a market this size they've tried almost every format through the years, including "All Elvis." How about a college sports focused station? Unfortunately, it's hard for a minor station to break through the current monopoly and establish listenership.

I travel frequently to Dayton, Ohio. Chick Ludwig said yesterday that he's on 980 talk radio in Dayton from 3-6pm. If anyone is up in that area, check it out. He's said he is very UC friendly. Too much Reds and Bengals in Cincinnati talk radio. Just last week, Mo said that the only thing that moves the meter at 1530 is anything Bengals. He said all other topics are low rent. I guess that means UC topics.

I believe that Pitt subsidizes their shows on 93.7 The Fan. And yes, Bostick is a part of their radio team.

I noticed he was on during the holidays. Glad to read that its a permanent gig. And yes, he talked a good bit about Tuberville and the basketball team.

C'mon UC, we are getting free advertising in Dayton. Spend a little money up here in the Miami Valley.

If UC ever wants to grow the fan base, Dayton (and the area 50-60 miles north of there) is the place to start. Lots of UC grads in that area.

"WQRT" in respect to its circumstances is amusing to old-school radio operators. "QRT" is radio shorthand for "suspending operation" or "shutting down".

Seems like a naming jinx or ironic destiny.

How would that grow our fan base? If they're already UC grads, they're perfectly aware we exist. If they're not, they'd probably have as much interest as I do in UD.

Many of the local high schools up here send more students to UC than any other college. Problem is they are mostly raised OSU fans, and after they return home many tend to slowly revert back to the Borg.
