We have about 8,000 alums in the Dayton area. Once you take out the number who are not sports fans at all, and the ones who are already attending UC athletic events and that number gets real small, real fast.

RE: New Sports Talk Station
I think there is alot of potential and UC grads in Dayton not to mention that Dayton sends more kids to UC than any city outside of Cincinnati. Secondly, I'm certain Chick knows his market and would not be sounding off on 1530 that he is on the air talking about the Bearcats in Dayton if nothing was there. I don't know many people in Dayton, but I know three Bearcats that live in Dayton that are huge sports fans. For the most part, they don't travel to Cincinnati to watch the Bearcats. However, two have indicated they are interested in tickets next year.

A lot less than you think.

How would that grow our fan base? If they're already UC grads, they're perfectly aware we exist. If they're not, they'd probably have as much interest as I do in UD.

Agreed. The faulty logic is to only focus on grads. They DO know UC exists. It's the local sports fan that is not an OSU fan, or just tired of them cheating. It's the parents of UC students. It's the folks that took some classes and never graduated but still root for UC. It's the folks that have made it to games in the past. It's those in the Miami Valley that commute to Cincinnati every day for work. It's the communities that have their "star football player" now playing for the Bearcats. This year's roster had 5 kids from the Miami Valley. Not a day goes by that I don't see C-paws on cars, or folks wearing UC gear up here in Dayton.

I could be wrong, but I bet at least half of our fanbase are not UC Alumni. Marketing to Alumni isn't a terrible idea, but you'd be much better off marketing to the casual sports fan. UC should definitely start focusing north a bit, even if it is just starting in the Hamilton, Mason, Lebanon, and Middletown areas. I believe it is crucial to the growth of the UC fanbase to expand its reach outside of the 275-loop.

RE: New Sports Talk Station
I live in Kettering and work in Troy and notice quite a few UC flags/stickers on cars etc. in the area and while driving to/from work. I see a lot of UC apparel on folks in the Kroger here in Kettering, and had some random people in the Troy Wal-Mart parking lot ask me if I was going to the Sugar Bowl a few years back. There is a decent contingent of UC fans here - mostly casual and certainly not all are alumni, but they (we) do exist.

I think one of the areas UC football is still waiting for is the students from my era (graduated in '09) to start buying season tickets. More tailgating options would help with that, as would more general "awareness" type marketing campaigns. A lot of my friends are just now becoming financially stable after struggling finding jobs post-recession/graduation, and are becoming more excited about UC football.

However, I don't think the majority of that YP group are diehard football/athletic fans like those on this board. Most remember the party atmospheres of Nippert, the pre- and post-game celebrations, and the bowl trips to Miami and New Orleans. That atmosphere needs to be re-created, and it sounds like the athletic department has some stuff in the works to draw folks back to campus. Clarity regarding our conference situation and a stronger non-conference schedule would help with that as well, but that's largely a variable our AD can't really control at this point.

If Tuberville is as good a salesman as he makes himself sound to be, we should start drawing some larger crowds... Hopefully. I remember someone posting some stats on here a while back when he was first hired showing the increase in attendance at TT after he was hired. I don't see any reason why this can't happen at UC, but I question how sustainable it will be if we don't get an invite to the ACC or Big 12.

And with that, I'll step off my soap box.

I think UC's decision to expand Nippert and not move games to PBS shows that they aren't really concerned with the "casual" sports fan. Look back to the survey sent out by Whit at the end of the 2011 season (results showed UCATS donors/fans - UC's primary source of football revenue I imagine) wanted games to remain at Nippert. Lance McAlister's poll (unscientific, I know) showed that the average, or "casual" sports fan, wanted games down at PBS.

I agree wholeheartedly with Whit's/UC's decision - don't alienate or piss off the 20% of your fans responsible for 80% of your revenue.

I live close to where Bruce is from and will second his notion that there are a lot of UC grads from the small towns north of Dayton. Close to 20% of my graduating class went to UC and about 3% went to OSU yet this area is largely dominated by OSU fans.

There are plenty of UC fans living below the Mason-Dixon line and north of the 71/75 split. Just to chip in with my 2 cents.

It surprises me how many UC plates and stickers I see in Independence and Florence.

If you see a UC sticker in the back window and a hideous man in the driver's seat, it's probably me. Honk and say "Hi"!

RE: New Sports Talk Station
oddly I've seen UC gear on several people in SW Missouri....I always ask them if they are from Cincy or went to UC. So far it's just been that they bought the gear or was a gift etc. Kinda cool

I wave at everyone with UC stuff on their vehicle around these parts. Kinda like the Jeep wave, but a little more creepy since most people have no idea why I'm waving.

Look for a UC C-Paw above a UD Flyer sticker on a Ridgeline and that'll be me.

Maybe I live a bit too far North, but I keep getting Classic Country Radio. One can only take so much Kenny Rogers.

We gained a new radio format and lost one this year already.

“Real Talk 1160″ WQRT-AM fired its local staff today after Dean Miuccio finished his “Cincinnality” morning show. Also gone are newsman T.C. Summers, and afternoon sports hosts Dennis “Wildman” Walker (3-5 p.m.) and Jeff Piecoro (5-7 p.m.). They will be replaced by syndicated shows through Monday. The station will go dark — go off the air — after the Notre Dame football game Monday night. A new format will debut Feb. 1.

In recent years, “Real Talk 1160″ has tried to compete with the Clear Channel talk empire with Andy Furman, Eric Deters, Wildman Walker, Piecoro and Miuccio. They gave up today, when the old MOJO/WCFN-FM (100.3) launched the Cincinnati Fan FM sports talk format and the CBS Sports Radio Network programming. 1160 operations manager Rob Williams and sports talk host/producer Rick Ucchino quit and jumped to WCFN-FM (100.3) for today’s start-up.

Jon Yinger, owner of the Michigan-based Christian Broadcast System Ltd., said in an email to me:

“We’ve decided to change directions with WQRT. Clearly, this was not the success that we though it would be. Having given it a really good run, we’ve decided to pull the plug. The live programs are gone as of today. We are fulfilling our obligations through 1/7/12 (Notre Dame). I’ll let you know as soon as we have everything lined up for the format change 2/1/12…. Thanks.”

Yinger says he might announce a new format as early as Friday. It’s not clear what will happen to NKU basketball games broadcasts

Not a surprise, no one listens to 1160. There are only about 3 square miles in the city where that station even comes in.

Actually, 1160/WQRT does cover Cincinnati, and better than a number of other local AM stations.

Like Salem stations, Christian Broadcasting System is not concerned about ratings in the traditional sense. They are a niche broadcaster.

Jon Yinger will tell you that WQRT was a victim of a number of unfortunate circumstances, including losing Dave Ramsey to 55/KRC, the recent loss of the Laura Ingraham show, and their failure to secure Don Imus for AM drive.

I for one am sorry to see them go, as I am a fan of small broadcasters no matter the format.
