It's not bad, but it's hard to figure markets in this equation. How much does Atlanta really add to Auburn's fanbase? My guess, less than estimated here. But a rough guide to 120 schools isn't going to be perfect. Overall, this isn't bad.
It is hard... but it is easy to know Auburn is NOT number 1 in total fans in the SEC. I don't buy Atlanta as a reason for Auburn number 1; if Atlanta gives a boost to anyone it'd be Georgia, wouldn't you agree?

I would suspect that Georgia would have more fans in Atlanta than Auburn, but maybe not by as much as one would think. It is a short 3 hours by interstate from Auburn to Atlanta, and I am sure they have a big alumni base there.

I think you can build your fan count by actually voting on your preference. IMO it is a better gauge of fan support and television eyes than the Nielsen by market method.
Surely everyone knows that UL, LTU, and ULM get more television eyes in the state of Louisiana than TooLame and by a lot, but somehow they are viewed as a major market.
I guess if TooLame managed to become a Boise type program they would be a major market mover, but until that day they get almost zero in the New Orleans Metro.
Express, are you actually upset over Mr. Silvers numbers? Here is what we know; UL has over 105,000 alumni in the Acadiana area in addition to a large alumni base in New Orleans and a good sizable amount in Houston. So when you look at those numbers, along with our average attendance numbers that past two years and our bowl attendance and no one could possibly even imply ULM or Tulane have more fans as UL! Silver's numbers concerning LSU is even more flawed! Half the state are LSU fans in one manner or another, that would put them over 2 million fans.
Regardless of what Silver's key factors are, his numbers are extremely flawed and completely off the chart.

It's a calculation. I'm sure you're right, but they wont change the numbers based on a gut feeling. Another example: Washington State does not have the tiny fanbase attributed to them. They are quite big in Seattle and Western Washington, but I doubt they got much credit for the state's largest market. It is what it is, and it's interesting. And there will be outliers!

The best gauge of fan support are merchandise sales, alumni donations, and home attendance. I'd like to see a study with those factors rather than market size and tv ratings. I know App State, Montana, and Delaware rank above much of the non-AQ FBS on all three measures, as do schools known for basketball like Gonzaga, Xavier, and Butler.

Cut that in half, it's only an hour and a half from Auburn to Atlanta

I live in Atlanta and there are plenty of auburn fans here, but it is defiantly second to Georgia. There is also a large Clemson fan base here.
