five turnovers in the first half and then 12 in the second half. Northeastern made some good adjustments and really caused us problems with our passign in the second half. Fortunately, they were turning it over a lot too and could not hit anything.

There were 35 total fouls called in the game. The average this year for total fouls is 36.2.

Admittedly, I wouldn't know if that was an inordinate number of fouls. I've acknowledged more than once that I'd defer to those with greater understanding of basketball, and I certainly count MB in that camp.

Mine was just an observation that it seemed like a lot of fouls in a not particularly physical game to me.

I'm still waiting on this speed the commercials keep talking about. Came out slow first half but increased tempo somewhat as game progressed.

It's going to be controlled aggression. As we all stated before the season, this isn't going to be as chaotic/fast as the 40 minutes of hell under Anderson. Watch UNC and you'll get a good idea of what Haase eventually wants this team to be. It's really about getting the ball past half court and getting a good shot up quickly. Right now, with a thin bench, and a small team, I'm guessing Haase is making some adjustments to make sure we don't have 2 guys foul out of every game and to make sure the guys don't get winded playing 25-35 minutes a game at full speed ahead.

Remember how much we complained when XCMD didn't make adjustments to anything ever? I expect to see a lot of different things next season with all our returning players having a experience in Haase's system, and a bunch of new faces that Haase recruited specifically for his style of a play.

According to Ken Pomeroy's web page, UAB's adjusted tempo is ranked 13th in the country. North Carolina is 2nd. UAB's adjusted tempo far exceeds any other team in C-USA and would be second in the ACC. Houston's adjusted tempo is 2nd in C-USA, and they are 76th nationally.

Tempo is calculated as FGA-OR+TO+0.475xFTA

That's field goals attempted minus offensive rebounds, plus turnovers, plus 0.475 times free throw attempts. The adjusted part takes into account the quality of the opposing defenses, the site of each game, and when each game was played (recent games get more weight).

Now if you want to compare this team's tempo with the XCMA era, UAB finished 3rd in the country in adjusted tempo in 2003, finished 24th in 2004, and finished 29th in 2005.

Last year, XCMD's last year at UAB, UAB's adjusted tempo finished 319th in the country. UAB finished 315th in 2011 and 254th in 2010.

Haase's style of basketball is one of fast tempo. The team is very aggressive offensively. It's much more entertaining than the past five years of UAB basketball.
