Almost halfway through the season, grade Larry Brown's job at SMU
From the article from AP and looking at his results I have to give it a solid A

Will they win C-USA, doubtful but I can see a top 4 finish with Marshall having a down year

3 bad losses. No good wins. Two wins in the top 200. Nowhere near an A.

Top 4 in the West maybe. UTEP wins the West now that they've got somebody who can shoot from outside. Houston is probably the most athletic team in the conference outside of Memphis. Tulsa probably edges SMU for 3rd in the West.

SMU has almost no depth. 5 guys are averaging 30 minutes a game. They don't shoot extremely well and they don't rebound very well. The only thing they do well is get to the foul line and that's a hard way to play the game in conference play on the road unless you're a marquee team in the conference which they are not. My guess is they lose twice to UTEP, twice to Houston, split with Tulsa and Tulane and take two from Rice. Against the East teams, I don't see them beating anyone on the road and they get USM, Memphis, and East Carolina at home. I think they go 1-2 against those three. That puts them at 5-11 on the season. At best, I think they win 7 in conference. Unless there's a stud gaining mid-year eligibility or somebody who has been hurt that I don't know about, I can't see them being in the top half of the league this season. It doesn't mean Larry Brown isn't a good coach, but he's not going to turn SMU around in one season.

A better question is - will Larry Brown still be at SMU next year?

Probably not.

I would give him a B. He has managed to get the team to win every game against poor teams. They do have a win aginst rpi 114 Utah at home but lost to them on the road. Their next best win is against rpi #198 Rider at home. There is no way I think they finish above UTEP, Memphis, USM or ECU. They are performing better than expected.

Must remember, SMU would have lost most of these games if Larry Brown hadn't came to coach.
