RE: UAB Football
Considering they voluntarily left the SEC and de emphasized athletics for years yes I will say they weren't trying. They will have periods where they do what is necessary to win, and then periods where they don't. They kept Toledo around for years when he was clearly not a good coach. They have imposed entrance standards in the past that honestly make it nearly impossible to really be competitive at the FBS level. I hope they are taking the steps SMU took and will stick with them.

RE: UAB Football
Concerning Tulane and UAB comparison that is totally not logical. Tulane was at one time a big time program that was able to be a charter member of the SEC, and Tulane has had a football program that few schools go further back in time. The biggest problem Tulane had (might still have) is they had (have) such high academic standards in an area not exactly known for it's academic standings, to recruit from. Tulane was faced with lower the standards or lowering their football program. It seems, at least on the surface, that the NCAA standards have risen for all teams to meet, and that might have helped Tulane, also I don't know but I suspect Tulane has lower at least slightly their standards.

UAB is fighting the GIANT in the form of Alabama Crimson Tide and the other big guy on the block Auburn, not only for recruits but for every single morsel of college football money. A challenge most would rather not fight, and certainly one that you will fight forever. It is a state school so the battle is tilted to the Tide and Tigers heavily.

There are athletes at Tulane right now that couldn't get into UAB. Our admission standards for athletes are the toughest in the conference (a statistical tie with Rice IIRC)

Thanks for that, you are absolutely correct about UAB standards. I had a friend whose wife was very sick and they sought the help of several hospital systems to save her life. She went to UAB and they were able to give her the best treatment and she was saved due to the expertise of UAB

Some of you may be computer programmers. IF any intelligent dialogue happens to occur in this thread, it is corrupted by being contained in a David Krysakowski wrapper.

If you had Kobe beef flown in from Japan, it could be the hypothetical logical, intelligent, respectful dialogue that you place between 2 pieces of 2-week old generic white bread...which is the David Krysakowski thread.

He seems to come in cycles. 6-12 months off, 1-2 weeks on and then back into hiding.

It wouldn't be the strangest thing to happen on CSNbbs the past years and a half. It would actually follow pretty closely the (lack of) logic in conference realignment decisions. Hell, get him a gem-encrusted Motley hat: Second.

If Tulane can get out of the Superdome (hopefully they will have great success with their smaller "rightsize" campus stadium), that can be the blueprint that UAB can follow in the coming years.

My issues with Tulane are the exact opposite of my issues with UAB. UAB wants to get better and isn't allowed to, while for years Tulane just didn't even put in the effort. The only barriers Tulane faced for improvement are ones they put on themselves. Same as Rice and the same as SMU for years.
Someone else noticed those sandbags in Tulane's trunk....

I wonder if they'll take them out for the Big East. My money is on "no."

Yet Tulane is doing what YOU want them to do (i.e. better themselves, INVEST in themselves), same thing SMU is doing.

Tulane, had some past bad leadership and national disaster, can't change the past...they can only focus/invest in the future...and they are doing just that.

Which is why I put it in past tense. I know they are now making the investment, but are they willing to stick with it and not de emphasize athletics again a few years from now? They will have periods where they take it serious and then will go through a decade of not trying. Tulane can have success if they decide they want to and stick with it. Hopefully they will this time.

I'm not sure they're "making the investment." They're trying to build a very small stadium in a part of town most of the locals avoid. We'll see how that works out for them. If Tulane REALLY had the pedal pushed to the floor, this is not what it would look like.
