I haven't been to the oceanfront location.

I got the LWN at the Farmhouse in Kempsville. It's a great environment.

Good to know. I'll give that location a try when it warms up a bit.

I'd definitely give it a try. They always have a food truck, and you can see the schedule on their Instagram page.

They have a good outdoor seating area and it's just a fun place to hang out with friends.

RE: Official Beer Tread
So I was thinking either a slightly fruity & citrusy (but not to the point of NE-style juicy hop quality) DIPA or a Belgian Dubbel for the Bellavitano Merlot cheese.

Sipping the Commonwealth Mantis DIPA and I think it works. It has kind of a woodsy & resin hop quality on the nose, contrasting the thick dairy and plum notes of the cheese. There is a strong enough bitterness to cut through the richness of the cheese. The citrus and light tropical fruit notes from the hops don't quite complement the dark fruit notes in the cheese from the merlot soak, but they don't quite rail against them either. Maybe a juicier DIPA would have done the trick after all. Oh well.

Maybe next time -- On the other hand, if we're looking to complement the dark fruit notes then we should go with a Belgian Dubbel. It might be lacking the higher carbonation of, say, a tripel (which would have been perfect to cut through the thick richness of the cheese) but it possesses those dark fruit malty notes that play quite nicely with merlot.

**Also, saw that fresh Avery Maharaja was hitting the market if anyone is looking for a dank DIPA.

RE: Official Beer Tread
Had the good fortune of stumbling upon an international supermarket that had a cooler shelf full of Ayinger Oktober Fest-Marzen in 4-packs. A bit old but still fairly flavorful. Brought back pleasant memories of Oktoberfest past (this past one was pretty tame). Also picked up some cheap pint bottles of Wychwood Hobgoblin (a variant of English Dark Mild Ale, I believe) while I was there. Dark, malty, and sessionable is the game for me. I wish Yards hadn't pulled out of my market, because I would be looking for some Brawler right about now. I am not opposed to IBUs though, as I do enjoy some of the more aggressive Bitter and English Pale Ale variants. American takes on ESB are generally pleasant (the winter seasonal by Heavy Seas out of Baltimore is good).

Oddly enough, Hobgoblin is hopped with Styrian Goldings. About the only hop from Slovenia that I know. Might have to indulge in a bit of Eastern European hop studies in the future.

RE: Official Beer Tread
Had a bit of the Boulder Killer Penguin Barleywine tonight in addition to some EvilTwin Big Ass Money Stout.

[Image: KillerPenguin22ozLabel_2012.png] [Image: image_thumb%255B2%255D?imgmax=800]

Hot takes/first impressions:

Killer Penguin is a much more palatable "contemplative tipple on a cold winter night". It is a nice barleywine that came out of nowhere for me (only bought it initially because it was on sale). Strong with notes of candied/dark fruit and sweet malt with maybe a touch of toast and toffee in there. Kind of a caramel-y note lingering in the finish. Hides the 10% ABV well, although I am drinking a 2018 vintage so maybe it aged a bit on the shelf. Never been out to their facility so I have never had the stuff fresh.

BAMS is an odd one. I like Imp Stouts and I stowed this one away for aging months ago. I was hoping to give it a bit more time but a newer entry displaced it in the locker. Sweet, heavy, and thick are the watchwords for this one. Pours like motor oil, sits in the mouth like a runny cream, and it is almost cloyingly sweet. There is roasted malt to be had throughout, and some pleasant notes of bittersweet chocolate as well, but the molasses and caramel sweet malt notes get a bit too assertive towards the finish. Also might be one of those occasions when alcohol is so strong as to be perceived as additive sweetness on the palate (17% ABV). I'll be honest; every other sip of this I found myself very distracted by the overarching sweetness of the brew. It was an enjoyable imp stout to explore, but clearly designed to be shared among 2-3 people in mini snifters on a chilly night (possibly as a pairing partner with a sweet dessert). Won't be getting this one again for my purposes, but it you are looking for something strong and sweet to share with good company at the end of the night then this might be the ticket.

I just tried this last night and it was really tasty. Has anyone tried any of the other beers from these guys?

I really like their bourbon barrel ale. It's smooth and fairly light for an 8.9% ABV. It has some vanilla and oak notes. But at times, the taste of bourbon is pretty strong. It's a good sipper.

Their Blackberry Porter was pleasant and the Bourbon Barrel Coffee Stout was good. I've never had their "normal" beers like Race Day IPA. I am kinda curious about their whiskey

I managed to get some of the Commonwealth Hipster Kryptonite Wheat Doppelbock that a friend had stowed away in the fridge. Pretty interesting beer.

It has the clove note of a prime hefeweizen, which kinda tricks my mind into thinking there is some bright banana note too. The chocolate note (along with a subtle toasted/roasted note) brings it back down into the style parameters. This beer makes for a trippy experience if you have experience with hefeweizen, weizenbock, and doppelbock. Kinda blends the lines between them.

**And if anyone is looking for recommendations for those styles:
Hefeweizen/Weissbier: Erdinger Weissbier, Hofbrau Hefeweizen, Troegs Dreamweaver
Weizenbock: Weihenstephaner Vitus, Victory Moonglow, Scuttlebutt Weizenbock
Doppelbock: Weihenstephaner Korbinian, Spaten Optimator, Ayinger Celebrator

RE: Official Beer Tread
Made a visit to Makers Craft and Elation this past weekend.

Makers Craft has one of the nicest indoor taproom spaces in Hampton Roads. They also have an Emerson's cigar room inside the brewery if you like cigars. As for their beer, they're going to need a little time to figure out their recipes. I enjoyed what I had to an extent but it wasn't really noteworthy either.

Elation's space is pretty cool and the best located at the moment IMO. One negative on their space, the noise bounces off the ceilings and you could hardly hear yourself think. That will be improved when it's warm enough for them to open their garage doors.

Now their beer is tougher to judge since all they had offered were collabs. Their sour gose collaboration with Bold Mariner was my favorite. It was cool that they also had other breweries beers on tap and smart as well. The place was packed and they would have run out of beer within 2 hours had they not sold non-elation brews. Very excited to see what they do on their own.

The acoustics issue is maddening. Unfortunately some of my favorite brewery taprooms are operating in converted industrial space.

RE: Official Beer Tread
I just had the Ardent/Potter's/Champion collab Earl Grey English Brown Ale again and it is just as good the second time. Smooth and malty. Kinda caramel-y with a toasty note. Sipping a pint of this stuff in a traditional English pub would be tops. Not quite sessionable at 6.5 but still very drinkable (and pretty damn good IMO). Ardent's Dark Rye was also very good but a different beast at that intensity and ABV. Can't say that I have had much affinity for Champion in the past few years; just not enough exposure to their stuff I guess. Some of my friends were really into their Shower Beer a few years back but that was it.

I'm not a cider guy so I know nothing about Potter's either

Commonwealth has been an extremely consistent brewer. I love their stuff. It has probably been said, but you guys have no idea how lucky you are to be getting a Norfolk location for the Veil.

If any of you are ever in Northern VA, seek out Ocelot and Aslin.

Not sure what their ongoing beer with Reston is about but I hope that it gets resolved so they can open their taproom. Also heard they might be setting a satellite up in Alexandria

An Alexandria flagship location is currently under construction. They have a spot for a taproom in Herndon, but it continues to get delayed over whatever is going on between them and the town of Herndon.

Totally thought I said beef. And I guess I got the dons confused. I've only had one beer by them, and it was one of their syrupy imperial stouts. I need to get ahold of some of their other offerings next time I am up that way.

The Guinness holiday reminded me that I have indeed had a decent Dry Irish Stout from an Irish brewery that isn't Guinness: Murhpy's. I've never had their Irish Red and apparently they have a limited release winter seasonal stout that is only available in Ireland. I've had some decent American takes on Dry Irish Stout too, with the best probably being O'Connor Odis.

Boulevard's Rye on Rye 6 is the real deal if you like rye. A snifter of this and a good steak would be tops. Maybe finish with a cigar.

Reaver Beach is in advanced negotiations with the owner of the old Milan Station Post Office on Colley to make a sattelite location.

The landlord has a choice to make between letting the USPS come back or moving forward with Reaver. From what I have gathered, I expect them to select the brewery. If it happens, it will open around next football season.

This would be another great addition to North Colley, which is close to officially being named the North Colley Business District

As reported by your boy in December, Reaver Beach is coming to North Colley;
