The oceanfront keeps getting better. First it was Back Bay, then Smartmouth opened their pilot house, then Isley announced they were opening a spot and now Young Veterans;

RE: Official Beer Tread
A while ago someone said they got ahold of one of the Evil Twin Imperial Biscotti variants and I was very envious. Tonight I got to know one myself: The Imperial Biscotti Chili Hazelnut Break Imp Stout.

Encountered this one by chance at my local establishment after it popped up on the draft board. Saw the price tag and thought:

"Hey man, that seems a bit steep for a growler fill."

Asked for and was given a small sample, and I was sold within the first few cursory sniffs. (Three-sniff method for the win, yo!) This one is something special for the price tag if you like hazelnut.

Color: Dark brown.

Nose: Hazelnut, spicy chiles, some roasted malt

This beer joins the ranks of the most impressive beers on the nose. The hazelnut is very vivid, to the point that it sorta brought back memories of sitting in the waiting room at my car dealership sipping piping-hot hazelnut coffee waiting for the techs to figure out what the hell was wrong with my engine.

Taste: Hazelnut, some chiles, some roasted malt

That isn't to rag on the malt at all, it just had some very distinct flavors to compete with. Hazelnut is a note that permeates this beer just about completely. Hazelnut is very strong, along with some of those spicy chiles.

Mouthfeel: Moderate to heavy. There is noticeable warming on a fresh draft pour from both the ABV (11.3 % ABV) and the chiles. Both seem to calm down as the beer acclimates to room temperature and/or exposure to oxygen.

Finish: Hazelnut, some chiles, touch of roasted malt. Hazelnut show once again. Little bit of those chiles to keep things interesting.

Overall a very interesting dessert-style beer. Not as sweet as other offerings in that class, mostly because of the new flavors offered. I could see it nicely complementing a scoop of dark chocolate mousse after dinner or perhaps even a late-night decaf black coffee.

Was told by a reliable source that Three Notch'd is going to open a tasting room in downtown Norfolk. Would be a great addition.

Also, Central State is quickly becoming a brewery I have to buy when I see it. Garden, bleu and table are all delightful.

Three Notch'd would be a nice get. Big fan of their Biggie S'mores (regular and BA).

Curious about what happens to the Green Flash facility. Can any of the local breweries ramp up production to get the most use out of it? Or is the best hope that a larger brewery with eyes on expansion, like Green Flash, grabs it?

I'm a big Hardywood fan so it'd be nice if they made a go for it, but they invested a lot into their West Creek facility that just soft opened, so they're probably not looking for a major expenditure that soon. Though a tasting room or collaboration deal wouldn't be the worst idea.

Saw an update on that building that they've received interest from around the country.

I can't see any local breweries moving into the space. They all have either opened bigger facilities, have already or are building second facilities or likely don't have the resources to do it.

My guess would be the GF facility goes to an AB Inbev owned former/fake craft brand like DBB, Goose Island or Golden Road. Obviously, that's not ideal but they have the resources to outbid folks or get financing done in quick order. As long as it's not vacant too long, VB will be happy.

I hope I'm wrong and someone like Champion takes over, since their attempt at taking over the lease in the Hague got shut down.

Edit; I'm not sure what the resources of Commonwealth or Reaver look like, but they are the only local breweries that may be able to pull it off. Commonwealth would be my choice.

No local breweries are moving into the green flash facilities. There are 3 regional breweries competing for it and Founders is one of them. I haven't heard who the other two are.

Haven't been paying enough attention to Founders recently. I need to seek out some of that Nitro draft Rubaeus

**may also invest in the Dankwood if I can find some lesser Red IPA examples with which to form an informed opinion on the style

Heard the auction closed yesterday for the former Green Flash facility and construction was going on there today. Should be interesting to see who got it.

New Realm Brewing purchased the GF facility;

Wow, they are expanding aggressively. They literally just opened in Atlanta in January. But with Mitch Steele as their brewmaster, they're in really good hands.

I'll definitely be willing to give them a try, despite the fact that one of the co-founders is a JMU grad.

RE: Official Beer Tread
I remember a while I ago I complained about there not being enough sessionable malty English-style ales available here stateside so I went out and found one. Had the Pleasure House No Waves English Mild Ale today and I quite enjoyed it. Definitely malty with a bit of that toffee/caramel note to round it out. Hop profile subtle almost to the point of being negligible. Smooth and flavorful. At 4.2 a pint is a good idea. Kinda reminds me of Yards Brawler. Got this one on draft but I imagine one of those crowler cans of the stuff would be perfect to take out on the beach for an early-evening "sit and relax with the ocean as soundtrack" occasion. This was exactly the stuff I was looking for and I will keep an eye out for Pleasure House stuff whenever I can now.

If anyone is looking for a good hefeweizen heading into the summer, I can recommend Two Roads No Limits. Bit of a dry finish, pleasant flavor, nice gold color and good head retention.

RE: Official Beer Tread
I am slowly coming to terms with the fact that I am unabashedly one of those "dark beer in summertime" kind of beer enthusiasts. I had a Dutch one this time, "Tsarina Esra" by Brouweirj De Molen. Strong, malty, with an incredibly robust nose once you give it a bit of warming swirl palming the snifter. Kinda makes me long for the baltic porters I had back in December, but the one I have left is specifically for aging. That isn't to say that the De Molen is smoky by any means. That opening note on the nose is something special though, man. I sat for ten minutes recreating it using the "cover the glass, swirl, then release" method. Couldn't tell if the robustness I was experiencing was because of the alcohol (11% ABV) or the malt quality. Overall positive experience. Due to rarity of this particular brewery at my local bottleshop, might be the first and only time I experience this particular beer.

I'm slowly turning myself. I find myself ordering a stout or porter more than a hoppy beer. Even in summer.

Posted from mobile device. Hopefully it's coherent.

I dig a 5.5 English Porter or Brown Ale on a hot day for sure. The relatively subtle hop profile of British beers has always appealed to me. Bitter/ESB is also great for that sort of thing.

I scale back my stout consumption in the summer but the beers of the season -- IPAs, sours, goses -- hold limited appeal to me. A good New England IPA can fit the bill but otherwise I search out the fewer imperial stouts still available in the summer and cast my eyes toward the calendar to wait for the first wave of oktoberfests and pumpkins.

RE: Official Beer Tread
I haven't had a proper stein of marzen in years. Maybe this fall I will correct that if I can find a good Oktoberfest celebration to attend. Perception of pumpkin flavors is something that I need to scrutinize in my tasting method this fall as well. Maybe it was just that odd batch of Saranac's pumpkin ale I had a few years ago (pumpkin seemed artificial to the point of being perfume-y) but I have had trouble establishing a baseline for what pumpkin beer should taste like. If we could make August "give Cameraman beer recommendations" month that would be great.
