That's why I never understood why the BE didn't have a clean split years ago. The auto bid should mean nothing to either faction. Both sides regularly put multiple teams in the NCAAs for revenue sports.

Because if the team that wins the tourney isn't very good they won't make the tourney because the selection committee is under no obligation to choose them.

How often does a, "Not very good," regular season BE team suddenly rise up to win the BE tournament? Even a middle of the pack team would get an invite if it won the BE tourny. See UConn 2011. 9-9 in regular season, had to win five games in five days to be BE champs. You think the NCAA selection committee would leave them at home if there was no autobid? No, that autobid means something to a one or two bid conference like the MAAC or WCC.

Then what's the point of the tourney? Why even bother playing it if you're not playing for anything.

$! And exposure right before selection committee time. Why do you think the BIG went to a tournament format and a CCG in football? Without a conference tournament in a sport, the regular season champ gets the autobid. So your conference doesn't loose out there. The coaches were complaining that they were not getting the exposure at a critical time that all the other conferences were getting. The conference saw an opportunity to make more money. It's plain and simple.

Exactly. The tournament is a money maker for our TV partners. They will not give us as much without the tournament, especially if it's in MSG. On that note you also want to keep a hold on the Garden if you have that connection. Don't let anyone else slip in there and take it from us. Not to mention it's the one time of the year the entire conference comes together in one place. Anyone who has been to the BE tourny at MSG can attest for how great it is walking through the concession area and seeing everyone in their colors.
