The current Big East (much less the new one that's going to include Texas schools as all-sports members) had a much larger footprint and they never bothered with divisions. Even more to the point, the Atlantic 10 has more teams now with essentially the same footprint that the new C7 league is looking at and doesn't have divisions and they're not as well funded. Now, if you're talking about adding truly western schools such as BYU and Gonzaga, then that's a different story.

The current Big East uses divisions in both men's and women's soccer. It doesn't have enough participants to use divisions in field hockey or lacrosse and volleyball is probably playing round robin due to Title IX issues. With no football, that won't be an issue for the C7, so they might change formats.

I also think the Creighton and VCU fans pimping their teams on this internet message board for some stupid reason, since nobody here has any actual power or influence, might end up being real disappointed if factors other than simply basketball lead to their schools not being invited into the league.

What factors are you alluding to?

Outside of basketball, Creighton is Jesuit, has a fine academic reputation, has minor sports showing up in the NCAA's including two consecutive final fours in soccer, already spends on athletics, has boosters of substance who finance large projects and there were 18,450 fans at the game tonight.

What CU has against it is geography, a city of only 850,000 and less "national buzz" than a couple other candidates. I fully believe those may keep CU out so I suppose that may be what you are alluding to?
