But just like the unreliable uncle no one particularly likes is welcome at a big family reunion over the holidays, so too is doofy Uncle Jerry welcome at this party.

So, HWSNBN = Eddie from National Lampoon's "Christmas Vacation?" I like it!

When you have health concerns like he does and your able to secure a new job paying 3 to 4 times as much which will help insure your families financial security, you take the position. I'm sure it was not the way he wanted to leave, but the opportunity dictated what he could do.

Coach Kill was a fine coach and we are still seeing the results of his efforts. No one is perfect, but he did continued to lay the foundation to get where we are today. He obviously still feels attached to this program and is proud of his contributions and his time here.

I am personally happy that he will be in attendance and thinks enough of this program and university to spend his time and money to be a part of it.

coach kill kept it going

but he did the most important thing, he recruited and kept the cupboard full. 65% of this team is his. Glad he is coming

Props to him for the recruits he brought in. But, it's not "his" team in any way.

The Trib had a good story about the contributions Charlie Weis made to this year's Notre Dame team. Weis recruited 16 of the starters. Here are some of Weis' quotes from the article:

Quote:"The most important thing for me is to make sure I stay low profile and don't try to take accolades for their success," Weis said in late November, before declining to say anything more. "It's real easy for a guy in my position to sit there and say, yeah, they're all my kids they're winning with, or be jealous and bitter and all that other stuff.

But it's important for me to understand it's their team, it's not my team."

If Kill (there, I even said his name) could be more humble like Weis, I think we'd be a little more appreciative of him.

That's pretty bad, if Weis is the more low-key of the 2.

Probably. I believe he's still finishing up at Tampa Bay before fully digging in with WMU, so he's within driving distance. And also, among all the former NIU coaches, he could help out on the sidelines if need be -- or in the middle of the field at half-time!

+1000 Can't agree more, well said.

Not really a fair comparison, but in some ways Kill reminds me of Walter White in Breaking Bad....the guy's health is borderline at best and wants to provide for his family. Ya, not the best the way he went out but like it or not he did a great job at NIU.

It was never the fact he left, it was how he left.

Look at how Kill handled it, then compare it to how Doeren handled it.

hmmm, lets see....DD left for a bigger conference and more money. DD will not coach the Huskies in a Bowl game (a bit bigger than the not so sweet potatoe (with props to moron Quayle) bowl....DD is taking all of the NIU assistants he wants with him...DD won with somebody else's recruits...It all sounds so familar. The only thing we don't know is who leaked the info before Kill could meet with the players and what the other university demanded insofar as an immediate reponse to the offer....both had the similar possiblility of distractions prior to the MACC but Lynched will the Huskies to victory (albeit in double overtime) in Detroit....who is kidding whom? both guys did the same thing--only the circumstances which may have been beyond the control of either, were different.

I agree.

And Kill stayed three years. And Kill's assistants had followed him for multiple years just like when they all came to NIU with him. Who did he need to hire? PJ.

The circumstances are not that different. Just that one coach won a close game and one coach lost a close game. And one coach unfortunately had a media leak and the other didn't. I'm sure there was more to the N.C. State job offer than just the AD flying in and offering him the job the day after the MACC. Do you really think they just showed up unannounced at Coach Doeren's door the next day, rang the doorbell and Coach Doeren answered the door in his underwear while whatever the N.C. State AD wanted was OK with the president and board of trustees at N.C. State?

Could this be why the team was sluggish at the beginning of the MACC?

As far as I'm concerned both coaches came here and did what they needed to do to elevate this program along with their own careers to the next level. It's to bad we can't afford to give them comparable contracts to what the AQ schools are able to give.

And neither one of them stayed here long enough to see what they really could do. Of course in college football your value is based on how you did last year (if you last that long) and if I were a college head football coach, I'd do the same because your career could be over before it really gets going.
