The exception that proves the rule.

The country is full of these "pan-american" connections in collegiate athletics. Oh... yeah... Not so much. Meditate on the SEC (for but one example) and get back with me.

I dont see that in this latest move by the big east, I see a league that desperation showed when it invited the CUSA teams scheduled to join in the future.
I see a league that know if it invites another CUSA team to join, it will no longer be able to deny it is just CUSA, MINUS the big east.

I think UNLV and Fresno State would be smart not to split up their sports between 2 different conferences. They would have to downgrade their other sports teams. Long term that is not a good idea.

I see Boise State and San Diego State rejoining the Mountain West.

I think that's where the geography enters into it. Football travel is one thing. It's a lot of people, but it's really only about four times per year. But it would be damn near impossible to manage the distance in all sports. I tend to agree with you; we've mostly eliminated the need for concern about where a school is located in the modern society with instant information exchange and the ability to move quickly around the country. But it'd be damn hard to deal with 1,500 miles one-way for baseball series and volleyball and mid-week basketball games. Some folks are going to try, though, that seems certain.

Southwestern doesn't just fly in the southwest. Buffalo wings aren't just in Buffalo, NY. Philly Cheesesteaks can be eaten anywhere.

Why does geographic limitations only apply to sports.

If you'd ever had the wings at the Anchor Bar in Buffalo, you wouldn't make such a statement.

I connected through Denver on my way home this morning. Guess what kind of omelette I had. I thought of this thread and how silly it is, and chuckled quietly while I was eating.

Fresno is actually pretty nice. I signed with them right out of high school and spent a year there before I transfered to Bama State.

Like many things, it's relative. As a native Californian, I can assure you Fresno is considered a rat hole.

The western Big "East" schools are joining the Big West for all other sports. Don't be surprised if you see the Big West license the name for the name of the western division and the conference championship game called the "Big East vs Big West" game.

But the NCAA has already shot down the conference champion vs conference champion idea when CUSA and MWC were "merging". Besides, the Big West will have no FB teams.

So far UNLV has told the BEast to frak off unless they are prepared to have an all-sport western division. That could be what is keeping other MWC from jumping ship.

License name != Conference vs Conference. The name will still officially be "Big East". Now, if UNLV is holding out for a full Big "East" membership, then that changes the equation.

You shouldn't chuckle while eating a Denver omlet. You could have chocked on a pepper

RE: Big East contacts Fresno State and UNLV about joining in football
It's possible UTEP and Tulsa get picked up by the new MWC.

It's possible USM and Marshall get picked up by the nBE.

It's possible UAB remains in C-USA, which is really nothing more than the Sun Belt.

It's really discouraging reading the realignment forums where UAB is rarely if ever mentioned. Unfortunately, UAB isn't even the favorite team in Birmingham. UAT is Birmingham's team.

Our fellow C-USA teams don't want anything to do with us.

These are dark days for UAB sports, and it all started last fall when the UA BOT wouldn't even consider an OCS proposal.
