Just got to say, if the new moves do not include an all sports, true Western division, I'll be really bummed!

RE: Report: Big East Ready to Respond
If there isn't a true all-sports eastern & western divisions (you need 8-10 teams in each division to make this work), then this will be a bigger cluster than the original BE. All these teams having to find other homes.

These half-in, half-out arrangements are toxic.

And if he names the league Conference America, it will get laughed at, and probably sued by CUSA.

Build the brand. 2 true divisions under the same brand, for tv, etc.

Doomed to fail if it is tried half-way, IMO.

"Conference" and "America" should not be anywhere in our name. I have always hated the CUSA name.

No, you are not missing anything. Apparently that UAB fan has not realized that his schools programs are one of the main reason that schools are trying leave CUSA.

That would be a terrible decision.

lol. Hello McFly, youve had 16 schools in your basketball league for the last decade. With this set up, you actually would have most of your football and basketball games within an 8 team division. There just isnt that much difference.

The reality is the money isnt going to be there for Boise to hang around just getting a football-only share PLUS having to pay 900K a year in travel subsidies just to house thier other sports in a subpar league. That doesnt even consider exit fees and entry fees into TWO seperate leagues. How does that make sense for them? And more importantly, how does it makes sense for us to wave goodbye to them if we really want to be the 6th best football league?

This guy gets it.

All you guys complaining about the western teams remaining football only, did you not read the paragraph where it said an all sports east-west setup was also being considered? I imagine it will depend on what is preferable to Boise.

You can't have a viable western all sports conference and stay at 14. Even 16 is very questionable. If you want a small eastern all sports conference then you will try to invite western teams for football only and they will tell you no thanks.

Yes you can, the MWC survived as a conference for half a decade with only 8 teams. We can get by with 6 or 7 team divisions.

Nothing suprising from the OP... the all sports west is a fail. Get AFA in here and get going with two solid divisions.

RE: Report: Big East Ready to Respond
BSU fan here (long time reader, first time poster). The Big East must make a Western wing or they will not be the 6th best conference. They may get that designation for the next year or two with UConn & Cinci, but once those leave it will be over. Why?

BSU can't stay with a 70% share in both conferences, with all the fees. Making 3 mil. football won't cut it for BSU and would give the league 0 chance of attracting any additional MWC teams in FB only. The only way BSU can afford to stay football only and attract western teams is to make 5 mil + as football only.

If the money comes in closer to 3 mil., BSU and SDSU will return to the MWC in 2-3 years to align their sports - about the same time as Cinci/UConn leave. They'll bring Houston/SMU with them too...to make a better football conference in the MWC. Houston and SMU will come too, losing the two big teams from the East side (and no c7 schools to keep BB around), they'll shore up their football with a MWC invite and it still a decent BB league.

The BE will be hosed then....They MUST expand westward in all sports regardless of what you hear anyone read/say.

The article says we could go to 14, as is, or go all sports for everybody. Are you opposed to BOTH plans?

Two basketball members that draw poorly, have no basketball fan base and suck NCAA tournament revenue from UCONN, Cincy, Memphis and Temple. Horrible idea. Would rather add VCU and George Mason as basketball members. ECU and Tulane have never been competitive in basketball and they won't be in whatever new conference configuration Aresco dreams up.

I am a graduate of George Mason and volunteered with the athletic department. What are you talking about?

ECU gets about 5,000 a game for basketball. The conference can work and build with this.

BIG EAST READY TO RESPOND:

Having absorbed a direct hit by losing the Catholic 7 group of schools over the weekend, Big East commissioner Mike Aresco is about to go into a battle mode with a series of moves designed to not only reinvigorate his embattled league, but also put it in position to emerge as a viable 6th conference that could sit at the table with the five so called Super Conferences–the Big 12, Big 10, ACC, Pac-12, and SEC.
According to sources in the Big East, Arseco and company are planning on exploring the following moves.
1. Sell the name “”Big East”" to the basketball schools after getting some assurances from the NCAA that the cost of losing the Big East name will not cost them too much in the lucrative NCAA basketball tournament. If the name is sold to the new Big East, the old Big East will petition the NCAA to get a 32nd guaranteed spot for its champion.
Aresco’s contention is that a basketball league with Connecticut, Cincinnati, Memphis and Temple has a decent foundation to build.
2. Give East Carolina full membership (the original deal was football only) which would give the new league an Eastern group of Cincinnati, UConn, South Florida, Temple, East Carolina, Central Florida, Tulane and in 2015 Navy.
Form a western group which would include Memphis, Houston, SMU, Boise State, San Diego State and either Air Force, BYU, Nevada or Fresno. The capacity to expand to as many as 16 teams remains on the board, although the plan now is go into increments as teams change, going from 12 teams next season to 14, 15 or 16 teams in the following seasons.
In basketball, the all sports group would be all of the schools in the Eastern Group other than Navy, as well as Memphis, SMU, and Houston. That would be a 10 team league which could work perfectly in terms of scheduling. But additional teams (UMass) could be considered.
Aresco’s plan is keep the Big East together as it now stands for one more season in football and basketball, which would be a bridge year between new television contracts involving old and new teams.
The 7 Catholic schools have expressed a desire to leave as early as next season, but the most likely compromise that will be worked out is to give the Catholic schools the name Big East, collect a minimal exit fee which would then allow both leagues to begin operation on July 1, 2014, with new identities and focuses.
“Everyone is trying to make this as amicable a separation as possible,” said one Big East source familiar with the discussions “The Catholic schools were uncomfortable with the way the wind was blowing with more changes that seem to be coming and everyone understands that. It was just time to move.”
The moves the Big East and the Catholic schools make will come in increments, with a series of announcements and decisions being made over the next several weeks.
East Carolina being granted a full membership will be one of the first steps. The Big East naming issue will be the next move. Aresco’s league might come up with a hybrid name such as Conference America, which more truly captures the wide geographical and television footprint it wants to create.
Aresco wants to move quickly and decisively on these moves to assure such incoming conference members such as Boise State and San Diego State that the future with a new conference is a risk worth taking.
All of these moves are predicated on not having any snares over legal technicalities, but the overall intent is to get things moving as quickly as possible to allow both groups to focus on the future rather than the past.

Coiled and ready to strike. 03-lmfao

Going to strike fear in the hearts of the MCC and Summit.

As has been said already in this thread, we aren't going to be interested in paying $1 mil/ year to house our other sports in the Big West for a $3 mil/ year football payout. Not happening. You build 6 or 7 team divisions for all sports or it's likely that we'll be elsewhere when this is all said and done.

The hybrid model is a fail, that should be blatently obvious to anyone viewing this site right now. It doesn't even take being here any length of time to understand that.
