RELEASE: Ex-NFL WR Frisman Jackson Named Wideouts Coach at NC State
Raleigh, NC -- NC State head football coach Dave Doeren has announced that former NFL wide receiver Frisman Jackson has joined his staff and will coach that position for the Wolfpack. Jackson spent last season on Doeren’s staff at Northern Illinois.

“Fris Jackson played in the NFL and had a great career,” said Doeren. “He comes from the inner city of Chicago and understands how to relate to guys from that environment and help them mature through the process. He’s been very good helping our young men who had issues off the field to grow up and mature. I think he can also help our guys understand the reality of how hard it is and what it takes to be an NFL football player.”

In 2012, Jackson coached wide receiver Martel Moore, who earned first-team All-MAC honors. Jackson ranked 23rd nationally with his 1,054 receiving yards and seventh in the nation with 12 touchdown receptions. Receivers Tommylee Lewis and Perez Ashford also had their best seasons as Husky players in 2012. Northern Illinois will play Florida State in the Orange Bowl on Jan. 1.

The Chicago native caught 40 passes for 490 yards while playing wide receiver and on special teams for the Cleveland Browns from 2002-2006. He coached wideouts at Akron from 2010-11 and at his alma mater, Western Illinois, from 2008-09. During his time at Western, Leatherneck receiver Lito Senatus finished in the top 30 in the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) in receptions and in the top 40 in receiving yards.

Jackson began his collegiate career as a quarterback at Northern Illinois from 1997-99 before transferring to WIU, where he played quarterback and wide receiver in 2000 and 2001.

At WIU, he set the school records for catches (14) and receiving yards (286) in a game versus Indiana State on Nov. 17, 2001. He ranks fourth on the WIU single-season list for yards with 1,041 and is 10th in single season catches with 55.

“My family and I are both excited and thankful to Coach Doeren for the opportunity to join the Wolfpack family,” said Jackson. “NC State is a very special place and I will work tirelessly to help continue building on its rich football tradition.”

Jackson earned his undergraduate and master’s degrees from Western Illinois. He and his wife Lindsey have an young daughter.

“I am excited to welcome Fris and his wife Lindsay and daughter Anya to the Wolfpack family,” Doeren added.

"The Fris" used to play QB at NIU before he transferred to WIU.

I am really puzzled why the board has underestimated what has happened and might still happen with the current staff? It is not just plug and play as some have suggested. Doesn't the current class seem underwhelming given our current success? Huff (if he actually commits, I have heard Harsin from Ark St is pushing) would be a great get. There is a lot of hype and excitement with our success, but it doesn't seem potential recruits are flocking to us, primarily due to coaching transition. I get we have limited rides with this class, but you see kids who were focused on NIU now putting other schools into play, it's disappointing. If we lose Coach McNutt and Coach Kane, Rod better have a good rolodex. It's a shame to think we could be victims of our own success and the coaching instability it has created. It's an inexact science, so please convince me that our recruiting will be o.k.!

We're keeping both of our coordinators. We lost position coaches last year too. Odds are we will next year. Did you expect the head coach to leave and the entire staff to stay?

Btw, odds are you don't see the positive effects in recruiting until next year and the year after.

If NIU only losses Coach U, McNutt, Nielsen, and Friz that means you keep half the coaching staff. That's a success. Friz and Coach U only were here a year anyways.

Yeah, these things don't just happen, recruiting for this class starts .5 - 2 years ago...not many of them are going to change their minds 2 months prior, no matter what happens.

Barksdale did. He was committed to Wyoming for the whole school year, then on signing day he switched to NIU

Between the dead period, bowl prep and having to deal with extra media requests, as long as the staff is confident in the commits they have holding firm, I don't see any hurry to announce new staff.

hence the "not many"...yes, it happens, but an entire recruiting class isn't going to all of the sudden show up at the front door.

I'm not as worried about the committs we have, it's those that may still be out there we were recruiting. What's done is pretty much done with the verbals we have.

Yes, we can carry over schollys to next year when we have a much more solid coaching staff in place. That may be their tactic, to have a small but effective class this year, hire our new coaches, and ride a huge momemtum wave going into next years recruiting. All I can think of.

It's not a bad idea as we could get higher level recruits to committ early in the recruiting process next year. Just not sure what the strategy will be but I anticipate it will become more clear after the game.

I've wrote in more detail about this before, but my favorite story of the Friz at NIU was watching him throw a football through the uprights from the 50 yard line.

From his knees.

Why did Jackson transfer to WIU from NIU?

Novak wanted to move him from QB to WR. He wanted to play QB so he transferred to WIU. Funny thing is that he ended up a WR at WIU.

Fris had a cannon but had no idea where it was going when he threw.
