What you will see the Big East with a different name and CUSA transplants. Yes the new/old CUSA with minor changes....no UAB and none of the Texas schools.
Why single out UAB? What has UAB done to be unworthy of conference membership with such powerhouses like USM, Tulane, ECU, or UCF?
If only football matters then why Tulane or Memphis? If basketball matters why Tulane, USM, ECU, UCF, Houston, SMU, USF or any of the other schools that haven't won an NCAA tournament game, or even been invited, in DECADES? If markets matter, Birmingham is top 50 and #1 for college football. If academics matter, why reject the best public school in C-USA?
UAB athletics has been mismanaged from Tuscaloosa for close to ten years but that is changing. That period has not been representative of the potential that still resides in UAB and Birmingham. It will take time but the Blazers are headed back in the right direction.
Don't let the soul-less b@stards in Tuscaloosa win. Give UAB a chance.

While they may not be world beaters I hate to break it to some of the geniuses on here nobody in this conference is or has been. Memphis hoops is the closest thing but even that has its issues.
The constant knocking on UAB while I'm sure usually lighthearted is a little overboard. UAB has produced solid pros and is in a situation that I as Marshall alum understand in regards to the other instate OBNOXIOUS schools. While WV only have 2 Alabama obviously has more division 1 schools but 2 of them are monsters that think everything is theirs and fighting for scraps is the best of the situation to be had.
No FBS school in America has to deal with the governance situation in place at UAB. Rich old men that under NCAA rules are boosters of the University of Alabama making vital decisions for Blazer Athletics because Alabama's Reconstruction era constitution says they can. Every current or former C-USA school has had to deal with at least some level of interference and arrogance from their "Big School" brethren. Now I see that same type of garbage coming from our departing members. It is especially galling to see ECU fans attitudes when UAB helped get them in C-USA for all sports.

You can guess what you like. It doesn't matter whether or not I give UAB a chance. Whether UAB succeeds in football doesn't hinges on whether or not I give the Blazers a chance.
You guys get to wrap up in other people responses and opinions. BTW, you pretty much answer your own question as to what is holding UAB back.
Now go kiss yo'mama goodnight before you snuggle up in your Snuggie.

New 24 Team League in The Works
UAB will be a part of the Eastern half of Whatever that forms from the orphaned NBE schools, but it's not worth arguing over. First, the BOT (mis)management of Blazer athletics is a much bigger story here than it is anywhere else...including AD/Presidents' offices. The BOT gave approval for UAB to sign the conditional commitment to the Merlliance just as quickly as did other schools.
Second, college sports fans have incredibly short memories, selective memories, or both. UAB has been a WELL above-average basketball program since our founding...at times showing flashes of greatness (Elite Eight, multiple Sweet Sixteens). Even our "meh" period under Mike Davis saw us average 20 wins per season.
Finally, and probably most critically, why skip over a very large, urban MSA (one that has been #1 in the country for college sports viewing for two years in a row) in the heart of SEC country with an excellent basketball arena? For those who think Bham being #1 in college sports viewing just because of Alabama/Auburn fans, the city is also #1 in the nation in $$ wagered on college sports...yes, even above Las Vegas and, yes, it is illegal here.
