TALLAHASSEE -- From the fans' perspective, the relationship in recent years between Florida State fanatics and the referees overseeing their football games might be best described as tenuous. Long replay reviews, apparent missed calls and questionable decisions have defined the officials' recent experience with the Seminoles, the spectators are quick to say.
Most specifically, Seminoles fans have been overwhelmingly upset with those officiating games represented by their host conference. the ACC. Perceived poor officiating is a conference-wide issue, some are quick to say. It also is one reason why a growing collective advocates FSU's move from the conference with indeliberate, posthaste speed.
So, with all of that said, those FSU fans who do take issue with their conference's referees will be pleased to know that they won't see them anymore this season. They will see a different set of officials in the Seminoles' final game of the year.
When FSU takes on Northern Illinois in the Orange Bowl on New Year's Day, a group from the SEC will be charged to keep order.
Northern Illinois plays out of the Mid-American Conference. This will be the Huskies' first game of the year with SEC officials.
AL.com, a website covering news and sports in Alabama, reported the various bowl assignments for officials in this story Thursday afternoon. According to the story, ACC officials will call the Fiesta Bowl, the New Mexico Bowl, the Little Caesar's Bowl and the Cotton Bowl. SEC refs also will be charged with calling the Belk Bowl, the Armed Forces Bowl and the Alamo Bowl.
FSU last played under SEC officiating during its regular-season finale at Florida last season. The Seminoles won 21-7 before losing to the Gators at home this season 37-26.
