Exclamation So, best way to do the following
It looks like the MWC, CUSA, and what is left of the BE will be looking for schools to join them.

What would be the best scenarios for all involved?

I guess an artificial cap at 16 could be used but I doubt either of the three will end up at anything less than 12.

Its all about the geography.

Marshall will be in the ECC (unless you want back in the MAC, up to you)

UTSA in CUSA

FWIW, I am not opposed to have east/west membership but I think making tighter geographical fit amongst members and spreading out the good teams overall will make for 3 solid conferences in the end game.

RE: So, best way to do the following
My scenario:

Navy goes back Indy. Boise State and SDSU go back to the MWC. MWC also invites Tulsa, UTEP, Houston, SMU to go to 16.

The Big East has 8 remaining: ECU, USF, UCF, Memphis, Temple, Tulane, Cincy, UConn

First four in (CUSA brethren): USM, Marshall, UAB, Rice

That puts them at 12 where they could stop, but they want 14 or maybe even 16

Remaining CUSA schools: La Tech, UTSA, UNT, ODU, Charlotte, MT, FIU, FAU

FIU/FAU stand no chance unless UCF and USF are gone, which isn't likely unless ACC gets hit multiple times. For now, let's assume that doesn't happen.

My guess is that the conference will want a Texas presence and the media markets, so UTSA and UNT are in. That would be 14. MT, La Tech, ODU, and Charlotte would duke it out for 2 more spots if they went to 16 or if they backfilled with UConn and Cincy leaving. If both of those schools were gone to the ACC and the conference wants 16, then all four would be in.

If UConn and Cincy leave, and the conference goes to 16, FIU/FAU are stuck on the outside looking in. CUSA calls up nearly the entire Sun Belt or FIU/FAU go back to the Belt.

Possible divisions if that 16 team alignment happened:

East...........West
MT.............Memphis
UCF............Rice
USF............UAB
ECU............Tulane
ODU............USM
Charlotte.....UTSA
Marshall.......La Tech
Temple........North Texas

Both the MWC and the Conference Formerly Known as the Big East are at 16. CUSA literally becomes Sun Belt 2.0 and that's that.

You guys are jumping the gun here...Terry Holland states that all of the football schools scheduled to be in the Big East by 2014 are committed to each other and are committed to building the best football conference that they can.

Said he was actually surprised that it took this long for the Basketball schools to leave the Big East.

Said that this does not change any of the Big East football plans.

I would add that in my own view, if you don't play D1 Football and Basketball you won't be here. If you play bball and are 1AA in football then you have to commit up front that you are moving football up, if you aren't then you are passed over. Everyone can see that split allegiances don't work.

The basketball schools moving on has no effect on a conference that was built on football to start with. They will just hand out more all sports memberships and add a team or 2 to what they have.

They might be committed to each other in rhetoric and spirit--maybe--but they become independents if the BE ceases to exist.

What conference are you talking about?

What conference are you talking about?

The Big East of course. The one where basketball schools are talking about moving on. Heck right now they would have 12 if they kept all for every sport (ignoring Navy). If Boise/SD St are just football, they can add 2 more teams and get to 12 and stop.

I also don't see how Middle Tennessee fans scenario is plausible. The Big East has Memphis. They don't need MT at all. If MT were that hot of a commodity in regards to a new Big East, CUSA wouldn't have failed to add them with their initial 6 before FAU/MT. Let's be realistic here.

UConn
Cincy
South Florida
Central Florida
SMU
Houston
Tulane
ECU
Memphis
Temple

That is 10 right there for all sports. You only need 2-4 more for all sports. If Boise/SD St want to, they could add 2 more from the Mountain West. Or if those two move on, they could add Tulsa and a few more from CUSA. I wouldn't be surprised at all if UMASS was one they would think of adding.

Or if the basketball schools take the name with them... I don't see the C7 just letting the BE go that easily. Why not dissolve it or take it instead of paying exit fees?

This is where it gets tricky. If the C7 choose to desolve the conference then they will lose millions in tourny money. If they choose to break away, essentially telling SDSU, Boise, SMU, Houston, UCF, Memphis, Tulane and ECU you are no longer welcome here and kick them out of the conference before their join date. then you may have lawsuits. Those 7 are in a damned if you do and damned if you don't situation.
