I would say they could go after the bigger fish in Virginia, but I don't see JMU or William & Mary leaving the CAA for what would be a lateral move at best.
With this stadium: http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http...Aw&dur=866
I'd say JMU is looking to go FBS as soon as the opportunity arises.
Agreed, that's why I think it's a long shot (calling it a "long shot" is probably optimistic at that). A lot really depends on what happens with the C-USA schools that are slated to leave for what's left of the Big East. If they backtrack and effectively send the four Sun Belt teams headed for C-USA back to the SBC, a school like James Madisom might have better luck teaming up with ASU, GASO, Jacksonville State, maybe Delaware, Liberty, Kennesaw State, and a couple of Southland school to form their own FBS conference. There would definitely be a vacuum to be filled if the Big East went bye-bye.

RE: Critical Information
I don't think JMU or Delaware are going anywhere anytime soon. Not with the admin there. Both schools admin have said they would not go IA unless a big conference was in sight. And well the ACC isn't going to come calling for them. So they can stay right where they are then.

1) Football will be announced to return;
2) We will announce we are returning to the Southern Conference;
3) We will buy out of the ASun, and be playing in the SoCon as of August of 2013;
4) Student fees will be raised $200/semester without a vote, to sustain football;
5) A new football stadium will be built which will contain a track, will be on campus (not completely determined yet, but it would appear that way), and it will seat 15,000 at the cost of $18 million. All of that cost will be privately raised.
The information comes from an extremely credible source, honestly, as credible as it possibly could be. The only piece of info I may be erroneous on is the conference, as it could be the OVC. The OVC w ould allow to come in with non-scholarship football, which is still a possibility, although it seems to me it's remote, because of the league you play in for non-scholly football at this level (Pioneer). What I do know is we're leaving the ASun, it's coming, and I was told to spread the word.
The CAA turned us down. No interest in ETSU. Big South, SoCon, & OVC are all interested, but only if we have football as part of our athletic program
You don't have to believe what I just said, but after reading your posts after all of the Committee 125 info getting passed around, I thought I would try to settle the dust. If I'm wrong, then the overarching Committee made drastic changes that were unexpected. That's all I can say for now.
I would prefer SoCon, but anything will be better than the ASUN. Glad that football will be back sooner than later. Go Bucs!

It's non-scholarship football, though. They wouldn't be playing in the SoCon because they'd be too busy making an inordinate amount of money from 63 student athletes paying tuition.
Still, they would keep the private schools happy in the SoCon, while we (along with another school, maybe Coastal Carolina) replenish the public ranks.
It really depends on how far the SoCon wants to go. If they lose ASU and GASO to the Sun Belt and want to go all the way to 16 teams, they could basically cull anything resembling a quality school from the A-Sun and the Big South and form a large and overall competitive conference.

That's only 15 teams, so they could add another non-football school in the North (like Campbell, UNCA, Winthrop, or Lipscomb). I would say they could go after the bigger fish in Virginia, but I don't see JMU or William & Mary leaving the CAA for what would be a lateral move at best.

Is Campbell going Scholarship? I know Steele left a mess, Minter should be a good hire. He's assembled an interesting staff.

Campbell is a non-scholarship football school. They would not join the SoCon for football unless they added scholarships. That's why Davidson also plays in the Pioneer League.
