Toledo
One of Toledo's center's (D. Dear) is transferring. Apparently, they are now down to just 7 players on scholarship. Talk about a sinking ship...

Not sure if there is an article out there on it, but saw it from a UT columnist (Ryan Autullo) on Twitterland.

They have their own thread about it. I believe it's the second one to transfer out recently.

RE: Toledo
I just went to the Rockets website to see how much they had played, found Dear & aj Matthews have already been deleted from the roster. Stat sheets show they were not getting min.

Quote:2012-13 West Division Predicted Order of Finish
1. Toledo – 143 Votes (20 first place votes)
2. Eastern Michigan – 118 Votes (4)
3. Western Michigan – 88 Votes
4. Ball State – 74 Votes
5. Northern Illinois – 46 Votes
6. Central Michigan – 35 Votes

WOTS

Kowalczyk is tough on his players.

Ryan Majerle left quickly last year, despite getting plenty of minutes.

He has also won games elsewhere.

We'll see.

Who knows, maybe Kowalczyk is the Norman Dale of the MAC. But does he have a Jimmy Chitwood on his roster?

RE: Toledo
Toledo has five guys coming in next year that would have taken more time away from them including two transfers one of which is JD Weatherspoon from Ohio State who plays the same spot as Dear.

Its far from a sinking ship, its setting up for a big run next year with a ton of home games and more than likely MAC POY Rian Person being a senior. Plus Toledo will get all of its practice time back next year as well.

I agree. I just didn't expect a step back from last year. Maybe it's more lateral...or not a complete view of the program right now.

You're right. Its more lateral this year, Toledo can only practice 4 times a week for 2 hours and that includes lifting. We only had 8 practices before our first game. I would like to think it more like letting the deadwood drift away. In reality Dear wasn't very good and Matthew really wasn't a point guard and really couldn't shoot well enough to be a 2 guard.

This.
Dear never played much so his loss is insignificant. Matthews, if I recall, was suppose to be a stud recruit. Of course that would be based on recruiting websites that "know all". Still, that is on the staff. Don't evaluate correctly you can't expect performance.

Matthews was no one's stud recruit. Dominated in 8th grade AAU physically, and after that was just a solid all-around guy with no one distinguishing skill.

Thus far Michigan has not been good for Kowalcyzk. Jonathan Williams may change that.

One's stud is anothers gelding. I remember some fanfare when Matthews commited to Toledo. Maybe those were still clinging to Jr. High reports. Regardless, he wasnt a "leftover or after thought".
But agree re Michigan and Toledo.
As I look back at many of Michigan's touted best over the last number of years most have panned out to be mediocre. Cyclical I guess.
