If this scenario hadn't played out like it did, which game would we not have? The EMU series or the Vandy game?

That would be the Vandy game. Right now we have Hampton and Eastern Michigan at home and Vandy away. We need one more away game to fill out the 2014 OOC schedule, and I expect it to be a big name BCS school.

That link has a copy of the contract to look at. It's kinda cool to be able to peruse that document. The more I think about it the more I believe the deal to cancel the Charlotte game, and them reciprocating looks like it was all set for a while. This contract was signed on July 1. I wonder when Charlotte actually signed their deal with JMU?

UNCC call and gave us notice the week before, so both could have games scheduled. Then we added a little WWF to it at the CUSA meeting.

The 2014 cancellation of the UNCC game had been in the works for a while ... Vanderbilt was going to be inserted into the Schedule to reward a fantastic group of young men that had taken a leap of faith to be a part of a vision.

I think we are still looking at a potential, future home and home with Vanderbilt. ODU sources feel this could be a very good rivalry game if we can sell it to Vanderbilt officials. Maybe a series for our future!

I do believe that UNCC's 2013 pull out of the game may have been anticipated, but it was not an absolute that it would be canceled. I believe that the chess game happened very quickly with all involved. UNCC really did not want to play ODU either year (2013 or 2014). When we pulled the plug, they felt that If they could replace the game fast they would cancel.

Just my take on how the events were being played.......ODU made a Move ~ UNCC made a move "Check" ~ ODU moved and it was "Checkmate" !

I am concerned that Vanderbilt and other BCS privates may now look at us a s a pariah. The Pilot may have cost us big time.

I agree..... It was self serving for the Pilot only. The General public could care less. ODU fans basically had a concept of the amount. However it served NO purpose.

The fact is now Vanderbilt feels exposed and compromised for future negotiations. They have customarily not disclosed the athletic departments financial issues in the past. It could put Vanderbilt in a bad position for future negotiation(s) with other FBS schools. Its hard for Vanderbilt to bluff with Pocket Aces, if all the cards are dealt face up. No mystery in reference to how much they are willing to pay.

Thanks to the Pilot, any opportunity for negotiation goes out the window. All future opponents can say "OK we know how much you paid ODU, we want more." This could have an influence on what Old Dominion is trying to accomplish with trust and cooperation between the two schools. I hope they understand we had our backs against the wall.

I felt that exact same way when I read it.. it's a lot of coin but does that strain relationships.

I don't really see a problem here. As a public institution, ODU is subject to the requirements of the Freedom Of Information Act, and I am sure that Vanderbilt understands that ODU had no choice but to release the document once the FOIA request was made. Having been personally placed in similar positions on numerous ocassions, I also have no doubt that ODU gave Vanderbilt a heads-up before releasing the document.

If Vanderbilt were to cut all public schools from its candidate list for OOC games, they would be left with a pretty short list, and all public schools are subject to FOIA. Face it, digging out this kind of information is what newspapers do, and FOIA opens the door wide for them. It's just the way it is.

I'm not mad at the Pilot and understand the situation but did wonder if things like that strain relationships. Big picture as you suggest, probably not. Either way, that goes a long way to helping our transition.

And I am not saying that Vanderbilt is thrilled to have the info made public. Obviously, they are not, but I have to believe they understand the situation for what it is.

I was thinking about that as well. That's the 2nd time a FOIA has been filed where ODU has previously said they won't discuss financial terms.

I know ODU guards their information, why would Miller and Minium pursue FOIA's and risk future access?

Or does ODU have no problem talking about this but they have to act like it's heavily guarded information until the pilot uncovers it?
